There is a popular Impression one should not open the bidding in fourth position except with a very strong hand. Many exports formerly held that view, but most of them have now aban- doned it in favour of lighter fourth hand bida.
Jo the following hand both sides were vulnerable, and necording to the old theories, not one of the four hands contained a sound vulnerable opening bid.

It is interesting to note that the East hand contained values which could not accurately be measured by a table of high card tricks. It had both major sults well under control, so if the op- ponents were to do any competi- tive bidding, it would probably have to be in the minors.
To be sure, the chance for game was remote, but it seemed prob- able that a partial score could be made in either spades or hearts, and the opportunity was too good to neglect.
