NEW SERVICE TO US.

JUTLANDIA INAUGURATES PACIFIC-ORIENTAL RUN

A large number of prominent ship. pers and local merchants attended u reception held on board the motor vessel Jutlandia between 2 and 6 p.m. yesterday afternoon, un the secasion of the inauguration by the East Asia- tic Company and the Chinese Ame- rican Shipping Company of their Pacific Oriental Service.

The ship, which has been be-flagged since its arcival in Hongkong on Tacaday, presented a aple and span appearance as the interested visitors were escorted over her. Surprising ly luxurious for a cargo vessel is the passenger accommodation aboard, and the cabins, each with private bath- room and sitting room, were respon- sible for much favourable comment.

The Jutlandia is n twin Berow steamer of 0,500 tons gross, and is propelled by twin Deisel engines. The ship differs from other vessels inasmuch as it is without funnel, the exhaust from the engines being enrried astern through thin exhaust pipes.

The modern conveniences for quick fonding and unloading of cargo include electric winches, their almost cerle silence being another feature of this ship. During the afternoon practical demonstration nf Cargo handling was arranged for the guests aboard the ship.

The Jutlandia leaves Hongkong to- day on the maiden voyage across the Pacifle to San Francisco. Ports of

en transit includo Shanghai, Seattle, Vancouver and Portland. The trip from Hongkong to San Francisco will take only 20 days.

The new service is being jointly operated by the Chinese American Shipping Company (Hong Sling, Agents) and the East Asiatic Com- pany Ltd. (John Manners & Co.)
