CONTRACT BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney

The hands selected for publica- tion usually contain a game con- tract which is either made or de- feated by spectacular play. How over, the majority of the hands played are commonplace. Thero are dozens of hands in which skilful play is required to make one or two odd, besides the usual sprinkling of misfits which lead to disaster.

There is, however, one Import, ant difference' in that each hand has an equal bearing on the final outcome. The defence must be on its toes overy minute and can- not afford to play listlessly be- cause the contract is an unimport- ant one.

It is just as important to defeat slam.

The Bidding, ene-over-one player would' not open the South hand in first position, but the particular player happened to be using a different system, so he opened with one heart. West passed and North bid one spade. This was perfect- ly satisfactory to South, and, see- ing no further need to continue, the bidding, he passed and one spade became the Baal contract.

Declarer left the lead in dummy this time, and returned a diamond, hoping to get a rut in that suit before dummy's trumps were ex- hausted. However, East again

East inferred from the bidding that North must have four spaces and South three, which of course left none for his partner. Further more, his opponents had all the high spades between them and would try to make them separate on the diamond trick, with the ly if possible. Therefore he de-face, and returned the third spade. termined that his best defence West discarded his last club. was to lead a spade at every op. portunity, compelling declarer to take euch trick twice.

fle led the deuce of spades, dummy played the ten spot, and when West discarded a small club the declarer knew that he was in for trouble. He overtook the first apade trick with the nce in his own hand and returned the ten of clubs, hoping to set up an extra trick or two in that suit.

Declarer led the ace of clubs from dummy and followed with tho jack, West discarding two hearts club and East ruffing the last

trick.

The relentless barrage of spades was continued, putting declarer in the lead with the king. He still had a chance to make his contract if he could find the king of hearts in the East hand, so he decided to stake everything on that possibi thelity. However, the finesse failed queen, and the trick went through and he was down two tricks, re- to West's king. He returned awarding East and West with a top diamond, which Eaat won with the score for their excellent defence..|

SATURATION POINT

To reach Saturation Point is the ambition

of every manufacturer and producer.

It signifies that the sales of his product have absorbed output. In these days not many products attain Saturation Paint; production is generally greater than demand. It is not so with soft wood. Here Saturation l'ont is reached and passed; sufficient timber. cannot be cut to cope with the world's needs. Morcover, forestry utilization has been brought to such a fine art that there are now over 4,600 proved uses for pine timber alone, such as is grown in selected areas in New Zealand..

In those fertile islands the N. Z. Perpetual Forests, Limited has evolved a scheme of afforestation which is putting pine tree (i.c, soft wond) growing on a practical and profitable basis.

To date over 85,000 investors of moderate means have collectively purchased more than 127,600 bonds, enabling them to share in the rich return their longalghted Investment must bring."

Their capital is steadily working in New Zenland 'forests producing the right kind of pine trees to meet the approaching world famine in industrial timber.

Bonds yielding approximately £250 in twelve years, costing £30 each-payable by Instal- meṇts—may now be secured.

Write for the prospectus covering the present issue and see how to get in on the "ground floor."
