Safety First Lectures.

The Automobile Association of Malaya is doing much to improve motoring matters generally, and at the Association's last meeting held at Selangor, some useful sugges tions were discussed,

The secretary read a letter from the Chief Inspector of Schools re- garding the subject of safety first lectures to school children.

The writer stated that he had writen to the Inspectors of Schools on the subject and found that in Selangor the Police Traffic Officer gave addresses at all the Kuala Lumpur boys' schools in Septem- bor and October, 1931, and that Inspectors of Schools issued to all schools copies of rules for cyclists and pedetrlans and instructions that talks about the rules should be arranged in all classes. The Chief Inspector of Schools is agala inviting the attention of heads of schools to the Importance of Instructing children in this im- portant mattor.

The contents of this lotter were noted with satisfaction, and it was decided to watch the progress in ne matter and to place it on the agenda for the next meeting of the committee. It is hoped that in due course, the A.A.M. will be able to organise a "Safety First" cam- paign.

CAR WEDGED IN BRIDGE.

An automobile, a street car and an immovable bridge girder figured in the unusual accident pictured above. It occurred on the Queensboro Bridge, New York, after a truck had forced the auto of Robert Montgomery off the automobile path and over the curb. The car plowed into the girder, bumped a passing street car, and wedged itself so firmly between the girder and the pavement that it had to be pulled out by an auto crane. The driver received scalp wounds.

LIGHT CAR PIONEERS.

On June 6th, Hillman Motor Car Co., Ltd., of Coventry, attained the 62th anniversary of its foundation, for it was on that date in 1907 that the Inta Mr. William Hillman, owner of the Auto-Machinery Co., of Coventry, formed the company which bears his name.

The object of this formation was solely for the purpose of entering the car which Mr. Hillman, in col laboration with Mr. Louis Contaler, had designed, in the 1907 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Race, and in spite of the fact that Ita production from the drawing board stage took only two months, it car- rled off the lap record at a speed exceeding 60 m.p.h.-an amazing performance at that time. As a result, orders were received for replicas of the car, and 庭 small

factory was built in Folly Lane, Coventry. The first Hillman models were four cylinder cars of 25 hp. R.A.C. rating, and they rapidly established a roputation for sound, practical engineering-which- the Hillman Company has ever since successfully striven to main- tain.

The Hillman Company were, of course, among the pioneers of the light car, and the 1912 9-h.p. model achieved remarkable success, being regarded as probably the soundest example of a type that was then something quite now.
