IL aounds highly fantastic-that a messagu typed on a telephone circuit at one end of the city should be faithfully reproduced in another office at the other end-but a re presentative of the Press attend a demonstration at the office of the Hongkong Telophone Company yesterday, and saw it done.

Everything seemed so simple. Á smiling typist sat down at an in- strument resembling an ordinary typewriter, and with a standard keyboard. The teleprinter

resistance connected through a equantling a four mile circuit to an- other teleprinter, an exact duplicato of the Arst. As an official of the the Telephone Company dictated, girl's fingers twinkled over the key- board, and an exact facsimile of her work appeared simultaneously on both typewriters. As the carrier came to the end of the margin, ahe pressed a key, and both carriers flashed back to zero again.

It seemed all so uncanny. Ono could visualise the second type- writer on a desk in an office miles away. With robot like precision it clicks into action at the call from a far-away duplicate, automatically prints its message, and shuts down three-quarters of a minute after the completion of the circuit.

Communication by teleprinter may be carried on over any circuit which will provide commercial tele- phonic communication. No 'changes of any kind are required in the exchange circuits, equipment - or line, since the small mount additional equipment required is located at the subscriber's station.

Like Ordinary Machine. The teleprinter is fitted with a keyboard similar to tr ol an which ordinary typewriter, upon the desired mussage is originated. Messages thus sent are received at the distant end of the circuit by a similar instrument and appear im- mediately in printed characters either upora tape or in page form. The teleprinter amy be aptly dys- cribed as an instrument which du- livers telegraphy tron the need for specially trained operators and places it within the scope of the ordinary typiat.

The instrumais are British throughout, and are manufactured by Creed and Company Ltd., Croydon, England, who are repre- sented locally by the China Electric Company.
