CAUSEWAY BAY-

MURDER

STORY OF STRUGGLE

IN THE FLAT

There were poignant scenes at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon during the accond day's) Bay hearing of the Causeway murder case,

Chan Ah-ping, amah in the household of the murdered youth. broke down and wopt bysterically as she left the witness box. The dead boy's mother who followed her was so distressed by the sight that she was unable to give evidence, and was allowed to atand down for half an hour.

"

The amah identified the accused, Li Kaap-ting, as her assailant on the night of the tragedy, but Kung Shui-hing, another servant who was also attacked, was unable to re- cognise her attacker.

The case was adjourned until this afternoon.

Mr. Schofield, Police Magistrate, heard the case, and the assistant Attorney General, Mr. R. E. Lind- sell, prosecuted. The defendant was not represented by counsel.

In evidence Chan Ah-ping said that on the night of September 5

was sleeping in the front cubicle of No. 40. Causeway Bay Road. On hearing a noise she woke up and went to see what was the matter. She was stooping down when she received several Sho called out blows on the head. "robbora" at the top of her volte.

Mr. Lindsell! How was the man dressed?.

East and West were vulner able-North and South were not vulnerable. At every table South started the bidding with ono dia-sho mond, but from then on practi- cally every table bid the hand dif- ferently. Some players with the West hand overcalled with two clubs. Others doubled-while, some, thinking that South might be putting in a psychic diamond bid, passed. In reply to the dou ble, East would respond with two spades which South would double. West then bid three clubs which North doubled. With West play. ing the hand at three clubs dou

bled, a minua score of 1800 was the usual result.

The most interesting bidding occurred at the table where South and opened with one diamond, Wort, using the artificial No Trump overcall to show at least two, and one-half tricks and not necessarily the diamond suit stopped, bid one No Trump. North passed and East bid spades. South went to three d monds which was now doubled by West. North, sensing a freak dis- tribution, responded with three hearts, hoping to find his partner with at least a few hearts:

The heart contract was defeated two tricks giving East and West a plus score of 200 on the board, while all but one other pair, holding the same hands as they, had a minus score of from 1000 to 2000 points.

The best bidding, in the writ- er's opinion, would be South one diamond, West doubled, North pass, East one spade. South should now double one spade to show his partner a strong hand, West would then bid two clubs which would be promptly doubled by North. East should not make the mistake of now showing the

Mother Breaks Down. The next witness called was the mother of the murdered young man, As she entered the courtroom the amah descended from the witness hox, weeping bitterly. Seeing her, the mother also broke down.

Another woman, who came with her to the Court, asked permission to sit with the distressed lady in the box but Mr. Schofield suggested that the witness could be heard later.

Kung Shui-hing, servant in the house, said she was sleeping with the previous witness on the night of September 5 and had been awakened by the cry of "robbers." She sat up in bed and saw a man in the cubicle. He sprang at her with a knife in his hand and struck her on the right side of the face with the knife.

Her assailant, she said, was wearing a white singlet and white short trousers. She could not identify the man who attacked her.

the bird, but was undeceived a moment later when she heard the arah Chan Ah-ping mutter in a suppressed voice, in which a note

of fear was detected.

A moment later, the amah was heard screaming "robber," where- upon Mr. Leung Wing-Buen raised himself from bed and went out into the passage to investigate. "Sounds of a scuffle brought witness in her turn out into the passage, and she could just catch a glimpse of the profile of the intruder as he darted past and leaped over a partition into an adjoining storeroom and dis- appeared.

Not Positive Then.. "I was not then positive that it was the accused," stated Mrs. Leung, in explaining to the court that previously she had often seen Li Kaap-ting, and had known him as an employee at the leather factory some two or three doors away from her home,
