MEMORANDUM BY THE COLONIAL TREASURER

In a memorandum by the Hon. Mr. Edwin Taylor, the Colonial Treasurer, ald on the table at yesterday's Counell meeting the following appears

in

hard to 1988:

extimated revenue for 1983 amounts to $34,001,576, an increase of $11,000 over the estimatos for 1932. No additional. taxatlon has been pro- posed. As a result of the general overhaul of taxation undertaken dur- ing 1031 referred to in paragraph 6 above, certain increases in fees and licences did not become effective unt!! late in 1081 and during the enriler part of 1932, and consequently could not be included in revenue figures of the 1932 printed estimate. This ex- plains the use of the words "Increased ferg" in the footnotes, to indicate that the receipts for 1933 are anticl pated to be higher than the estimat- ed receipts for 1932.

3.

The import duty on liquor and tobacco shows a falling off due to the higher rate at which exchange has been estimated for 1933 us com- pared with: 1932. The excise duty on locally manufactured liquor is, how- rather more than in at ever, estimated 1932 as the import duty affords alight preference to this trade. The a large Oplam Monopoly shows decline. Assessed Taxes (rates) and Water Excess Supply and Meter j are growing yearly. The estimated receipts fr reduced for 1933 from the Entertain- ment Tax have been having been over-estimated in 1932. Post Office receipts both on account of Postage and Radio Message Fees were over-estimated for 1942, the anticipated revenue from the increas ed portal rates not having materialls- ed and there has also been a large decline in the number of parcels despatched
