OVERCROWDING EVIL

DR. WELLINGTON ON THE DANGERS

TUBERCULOSIS

The annual report of the Direc- tor of Medical and Sanitary Sør- vices for 1931 is one of the most oxhaustive documents of its kind ever published in the Colony. In it Dr. A. R. Wollington deals with every possible plinae of the health and sanitary systems.

Speaking of housing conditions Dr. Wellington says that year by year the population continues to Increase, Immigration being ac- celerated by the unrest in Chins. There being little room to build fur- ther accommodation nowcomers have to aqacaze into already, overcrowded accommodation. Year by year, the Sanitary Department and the Build- Ing Authority have made efforts to improve the situation, but the task, almost sinyphean is Itself, is ren- dered more difficult by paucity of water and by opposition put forward both by property owners and occupiers. It goes without saying that the main- satisfactory standard of tenance of Sanitation under such conditions is a most difficult problem and one which cannot be solved without the willing cooperation of the people, he com- ments, adding:

Respiratory diseases accounted for 42.25 per cent of the total deaths the percentage for 1930 being 38.05.

The principal diseases causing death were broncho-pneumonia, pul- tuberculosfa, bronchitis, monary pneumonia, infantile diarrhoea and diarrhoea.

The overcrowded houses combined with the expectorating habits of the Chinese furnish sufficient explanation for the prevalence of respiratory troubles.
