What is the safest system for bidding elams? That is a para- mount question in contract bridge. Showing a definite number of quick tricks is not always satisfactory, as there may be a duplication of values. The hotter player today is beginning to realize that in order to invite a slam, he must have com- mand of at least two suits.

commands ner to read the two which you hold. Remember, how- ever, that this command of a sult means that you hold either a void sult or the ace-king-queen-Jack is not enough.

If you now bid two spades you show-first, no losing spades; sec- ond, normal support in hearts: third, a slam invitation. You must have command of one other suit be- sides the spade suit because you are inviting a slam.

I am quite sure that if you will refuse to invite slams unless you hold these two commands, that you will immediately find that you are not hidding slam after slam that cannot be made.

Tomorrow I am going to show you an interesting hand that came up in a recent tournament where two partners who were using this command system of building, safely kept from going to a grand slam, and how easily they could have arrived at the grand alam if it had been there.
