The Ridding.

The bidding would be South one spade, West pass, North three hearts-a jemo overcall. This is a game demand bid and requires partner to keep the bidding open until a game is arrived at. In re- sponse to the three hearts, South should hid three spades to show a solid snale suit. He need not be afraid that the bidding will die, as partner is forced to bid aznin.

North should now bid five spades. South will then show support in hearts by bidding six hearts, and North should take the contract to 8x spades.

The Play.

Mrs. Romano's father was amongst the earliest Portuguese settlers in the Colony, and was so confident of the growth and the commercial possibilities of Hong- kong that he became a pioneer inventor in landed property, being the first owner of the farm lot of Pokfulum, which has since been tract of enlarged into a large grazing ground now owned by the Dairy Farm Company,

The late Mr. Remedios was also A keen amateur horticulturist. and his taste for gardening was shared by his son-in-law, the late Mr. A. G. Romano, who helped to develop the farm lot at Pokfulum into an experimental garden for European vegetables and flowers.

By all residents Mr. and Mrs. Romano will be remembered as keen supporters of the Hongkong flower shows, and some of the finest annual func- exhibits at these tions, which in those days were pleasant social the occasion of

As the wife of the Portuguese Consul General, Mrs. Romano, while the embodiment of modesty, played the part of an ideal hostess in their unique residence, then known as "Duort," at the junction of Arbuthnot and Caine Roads, just below the Catholic Cathedral in Gleneally. Her hospitality while lavish was unassuming. No guest at the luxurious consular residence left without a sense of pleasure and enjoyment.

After the death of her husband, the late Alro, Romano retired into private life, devoting most of her time and private means to works of charity, and quiet benevolence which she dispensed unostenta- tiously for the benefit of her less favoured follow beings. She had always a kind word for those in distress, and who had occasion to appeal to her for help, and she never let anyone, whether bers of her own community or outside It, appeal to her in vain. Hers was truly a kind heart moved by a sentiment of benevolence and goodwill, which gained for her the admiration and respect of all who knew her in the heyday of her husband's prosperity.
