Have you ever noticed the sym- motry of distribution? If your hand contains a singleton, you are almost sure to find another band with a singleton-if your hand is. vold, the odds are in favour of a second hand, being vold. This is a good point to keep in mind both in the defence and in the play of the hand.

Today's hand was played by Mrs. Florence S. Wright of Mo- Hine 111., one of the leading women tournament players of the middle west, at the Tri-City Bridge Club, which meets in Davenport, J., where the bridge players of three cities-Moline and Rock Island, 111. and Davenport-assemble to compete in duplicate play.

The Bidding

South, the dealer, although he holds even spades, does not have an orginni bid and passed. “Mrs. Wright, sitting in the West, passed. Third hand bids under the one over one system can be made with a very weak band. North holds a pretty fair hand, especially with his two suits, so started the con- tracting with a bid of one club. When holding a six-card and 11 (five-card suit, the longer suit

should be bid first.

East doubled and South 'bid one spade. Mrs. Wright then bid two hearts. North showed his second suit by bidding three diamonds. East jumped the contract to four hearts.

The Play

What would you open with the North hand? Certainly not a spade. Partner could not. bid spade the first time, therefore you cannot depend on him as hay- ing a strong spade suit. Your hand is void of hearts.

There is a chance that South may be void of a suit, and natural- ly the best chance lies in your long suit, therefore the correct

opening on the hand would be the king of clubs and when dummy covers with the ace, South should ruff with the four of hearts. You will find that the declnrer can now make only four hearts, his con- tract.

When the hand was actually played. North opened a spade and Mrs. Wright developed a nice squeeze play to make six odd, los- ing only the queen of hearts.
