It is often as Inconvenient to hold too many trumps as it is not have enough. The play in which we get rid of these exeos- sive trump is known as the grand coup. The declarer in the fol- lowing hand. must employ the grand coup to successfully make. his. contract.

The Bidding.

South, the dealer, started the contracting with one club, West bid one spade, North hid three hearts. This jump hid shows partner a strong hand and forces him to bid again. East passed and South bid four clubs, West passed and North went to five clubs.

The Piny.

West has the opening lead and although his spade suit is headed by ten queen he decides that that is the best opening in the hand and, leads the ace of spades. East plays the four and South, the de- clarer, plays the even. West continues with the queen of spades, East shows out by playing the three and declarer wins the trick with the king. Declarer

then leads his ace and king of clubs on the second club West shows out, discarding the three of hearts.

The declarer has lost a spaule and must lose a diamond trick, and it now looks as though he must lose a club trick to East as East holds the jack nine while the declarer holds the queen ten but has no way of leading clubs. through East. Declarer now de- cides to try for a grand coup and leads the four of hearts, Nurth. the dummy, wins the trick with the ace and lends the king of hearts, East playing the nine and declarer must discard the nine of spades so that when Baat gets into the lead on the ace of diamonds and leads a spade the declarer will be out, Declarer then iends the dence of hearts from dummy, East plays

the queen and declarer trumps. He returns the deuce of diamonds and West goes in with the ace and leads the jack of spades. East refuses to trump, discarding the four of diamonds and the declarer tramps with the eight of clubs and then leads the eight of dia- monds. West plays the jack and dummy wins the trick with the queen. The good jack of hearts is led front dummy and

when East discards the ten of diamonds, declarer discards the seven of diamonds.

The king of diamonds is led front dummy. East is forced to trump with the nine, declarer overtrumps with the ten and then leads his queen of clubs, picking up East's jack. By employing the play known as the grand coup, the declarer has made his contract of five

clubs.
