EXPERIMENTAL AIR MAIL PROVES SUCCESSFUL

An experimental mail #ent by Hongkong postal officials London, via the Saigon-Marseilles air route, reached its destination in 13 days.

The mail, which consisted of only 15 letters, was despatched from Hongkong to Saigon by the Messageries Maritimes liner Athos I, on June 7. The letters arrived at Saigon on June 10, and were despatched next day by air mail, arriving at Marseilles at 7 p.m. on June. 19. They were im- medintely forwarded to Paria, ways service picked them up and where the regular Imperial Air-

transmitted them to London. They arrived there on June 21. The actual transit time between Hong- kong and London was 13 days, and between Saiyou, and London. 10 days.

The average

transit time for mail to the United Kingdom via the Siberian route is 20 days, al- though mail has been received in London 18 days after despatch From Hongkong. The air service thus shows a saving of from five to 10 days.

The Laerial mail service leaves Saigon every Saturday, and postal of feials here will utilise every available means to connect with the service. Letters will be des patched Fron Hongkong to Sai- Kon by steamer, and will be hand- ed over there to the aerial ser view.

Proposed Direct Service,

The present service is distinct from the proposed direct service Thy air between Saigon and Hong- kong, tentatively arranged by the Campagnie Francaise Air Orient, the French company operating the Saigon-Marseilles service. The first of the experimental flights between Saigon and Hongkong will be made soon.

Large tri-motored Breguet monoplanes are utilised in the service between Saigon and Mar- suilles, und, in addition to carry- ing air-mail,

Carry pussengers and cargo. The machines leave |Saigon every Saturday morning and arrive at Marseilles on the Sundays of the following week.
