QUESTION IN DAIL

DE VALERA ASKED ABOUT, SUPPOSED LETTERS

Dublin, July 15. Reports from Japanese sources Mr. de Valera, closely questioned to-day state that since the Man- in the Dall regarding the tempor- churfan incident last year, Japan-ary banning of publication of the ed by the offering of planes to the and the Governor-General, denied csc patriotism' has been manifest- correspondence between. himself Army, thus substantially increns- that the Executive had ordered ing the Air Forco. The War Ofßee authorities have decided, in this connexion to form an independent fight regiment with theso "patriotic" planes with a Major General as commander.

The report says it is understood the new independent Air Force re- giment will be allotted for the aerial defence of the capital and other important places in Japan. The existing Air Force regiments will naturally be transferred to the north-eastern part of Japan,

Mr. de Valera declined to answer a question as to what wna tho obfect of suppressing the corren- pondence.-Reuter's Special Ser-

Dublin, July 15: The Dail by 66 votes to 51 has passed a financial motion giving assent to the emergency Imposition of Dutics Bill, which Mr. Sean McEntee, the Minister of Finance, said had been introduced as a self- defence measure, and not in R spirit of retaliation or aggression. He declared that the measures taken by Britain were not warrant-

Consequently, while it is felt bound to come, Japan will move that the Japanese recognition 13 cautiously rather than ineur charge which might be fraught with unpleasant international complications-Reute

East opened his fourth best heart-the deuce, South played

When North's jack views gathered by Reuter agree fell, West led the queen of hearts that any power recognising and Mr. Law, the declarer, trump-clear that Manchuria has secured Manchukuo before it becomes ed in his own hand with the five a permanently stable government, of spades. He reasoned the hand would lay itself open to a charge as follows-there were three ways of breaking the Nine Power to play it. He might take a dou- | ble finesse in diamonds, he might try to drop the queen of diamonds if they were split three-two, hop ing to find the queen and one in one hand, or he might play for a club break. The latter was the plan decided upon by Mr. Law. He therefore led the four of clubs, East refused to win playing the five, and Mr. Law won the trick in the dummy with the queen of clubs. A small spade was return el from dummy and won by Mr. Law with the queen. The deuce ship to touch at Tsingtao, where The NY.K, has agreed for the of clubs was then led, East win-they will disembark.--Reuter. ning the trick with the

ace, dummy playing the six and West the ten.

East could see that the clubs were going to break and that three valuable discards would be afford- ed the declarer. The only entry the declarer had into the dummy, however, was the king of trump. East boldly led the king of hearts hoping that the declurer trump in the dummy with the seven of spades. It would then have been impossible for him to pick up the trump and still get into the dummy to make his good club. But the declarer refused

to fall into the trap-instead he discarded a small diamond from the dummy and trumped in his own hand with the nine of spades. He then led the ace and apado, winning the second spade in dummy with the king, The three good clubs were then cash- ed, declarer discarding three los- ing diamonds from his own hand.

It is not very often that the proper play is to deliberately lead a card that the declarer can ruff in one hand and sluff in the other, but if the declarer had made the mistake of rufing in the wrong hand, it was the only possible play that would defeat the declarer's

contract.
