The Bidding

The contract bidding was South passed and West made a pre-emp- five bid of four clubs. North pass ed and East, even though he knew that his partner's bid was purely a pre-emptive one, felt that he had enough strength to ra to six clubs, which bought the contract.

The Play

North has the opening lead and leads the are of spades. When South played the sight, North con- tinued with a small space which dummy won with the king-de- clarer discarding the seven of dia- monds. The thres clubs are led From dummy, the third club being overløken by the declarer with the

The seven of clubs is the squecze card-declarer discurde the four of hearts from dummy and South is squeezed o all three suits. If he drops th queen of apades, the ten of spade will be good in dummy. If he drop a heart, declarer will make thre heart tricks, while if the queen o diamonds is played, as was don in this case, the declarer will len the jack of diamonds and win the trick in the dummy with the ac catching South's king. The ten o diamonds will then be played an South wil be forced to discard th dence of hearts, declarer discarding the six of hearts. Now the de clarer's ace and king of hearts and alx of clubs are all good.

By applying the squeeze, the de- clarer has made his contract of six. clubs.
