The Bidding

a du- The hand was played in plicate contract tournament. South, the denler, bid club. West over- called with and heart and North bid two hearts. This is a demand bid showing partner normal sup- port in clubs and at the same time advise him that the hand contains no losing hearts, and that there are slam possibilities. Enst passed, and South bid three clubs as his hand is but little more than minimum. West passed and North bid three spades. This was enough for South to go to six spades as the least partner could hold would be Ave spades to the king, inck, 10 And a side trick to invite the slami. This side trick must be the king and queen of diamonds.

The Play

East has the opening lend and knew that it was useless to lead hearts as North d advertised the fast that he was out of hearts. Therefore, East led his singleton eight of clubs North, the declarer, must not take the Anesse. Otherwise West' will re- turn club and his contract will be defeated. His whole problem in the hand is to locate the queen of spades. The proper play is to win the trick in the dummy with the ace of clubs, lead the ace of diamonds and then a small heart and trump it.

The declarer has two ways to

take the spade finesse. His pro per play is to lay down the jack of spades and when East does not cover, to win with the ace in dum- my and return the nine of spades. When West does not cover, the finesse is taken and works. The seven of spades is played from dummy which picks up West's queen, East discarding the ninc

of hearts, Declarer's next play is the jack of clubs which West wins with the king, returning the nine of diamonds which declarer wins with the king- Declarer cashes his queen of diamonds, dis- carding another heart from 'dum- my, and then returns the 10 of clubs, following with the five of clubs, which is won in the dummy with the quen. The losing dias mond is discarded on the six of clubs and the last heart is trump- ed with the 10 of spades. The entire play of the hand lay in locating the queen of spades.

BABIES.

By far the greater proportion of babyhood health troubles Aro traceable to dofective digestion and bowel irregularities. Flatu lonso, that distressing condition which is the cause of convulsions, slceplosances, Irritability and continuous crying, sour stomach, : diarrhoea and toothing pains can all be corrected by the proper treatment of atomach and bowels. Millions of parents have found the ideal remedy in Baby's Own Tablets, the pleasant-tasing, medicine specially devised by n highly-skilled, children's physician for the general treatment of the allments of båbles and children up to about six.

Baby's Own Tablets have a gentle laxative action which is uniquely gentle and neothing to the internal organs of the child. There is none of the irritant nc- tion which is the cause of that griping and purging so often ns- sociated with crude old-fashioned laxatives. Baby's Own Tablets are ideal as a general Juvenile health-safeguard, guaranteed to contain no opiates or harmful drugs but only those ingredients which have been proved to be the safest and most officncious for their purpose. In the homes where you find healthy happy chil- dren you will also find Baby's Own Tablets. Obtainable from che- mists everywhere.

ELECTRIC MAIN CATCHES FIRE

CALAMITY AVERTED AT S. C. A. A.

The fusing of the electric main not only caused the abandonment of the aquatic sports meeting at the South Chinn Athletic Associa tion swimming stadium at North Point last night, but very nearly ercated a most serious Are.

As it was, the prompt work of officials saw the flames, which within a minute threatened the whole pavillon, subdued, and a pos- sible catastrophe averted.

ел-

Hundreds of seming thusiasts gathered the pavilion for the event, the swimming an of the season organised by the S.C.A.A., and only two races had been completed when, without

of any warning, the whole the lights, with the exception of a few illuminating the men's dress- ing room and one wing of the pavilion, became extinguished.

Burst of Flame.

Only a few people realised the cause and there was no panic or confusion. Officials and visitors standing near the entrance of the stadium were startled to see flames

the burst from

electric light or threa switch board, but two promptly seized the patent fire ex- tinguisher close by and within o few seconds, though not a bit tou soon, had the flames under control. Before they were completely

i subdued they had reached the roof of the doorway, and for a moment it seemed that the whole pavilion, which is a wooden structure, was threatened with destruction,

Main Overtaxed.

An official of the South Ching Athletic Association informed a Press

the representative that cause of the incident was that too much power had been applied to the mains for the occasion.

It la understood that the Aa- sociation had expressed a desire for additional meters to be install- ed for such events as swimming gains in order to supply

the stadium with additional and suffi- cient lighting, but that last night the lights were working from the, ang main, which became taxed.

over-

Immediately after the occurence it was announced that the gala was postponed, and would be re- arranged as soon as possible.
