South opened with one spade. West bid two diamonds, North bid two hearts. East. passed and South bid three spades, West par ed and North went to four spades,

The Play.

West opened the king of dia- monds. When holding the nee, king and queen, the king is led followed by the queen and the ace On if played on the third round. West's king North, the dummy, played the deuce, East the nine and South, the declarer, played the five of diamonds. West continued with the queen of diamonds and East played the eight, completing his echo showing out, and request- ing his partner to continue dia monda. The ace was then led by West, East discarding the deuce of hearts, discouraging a heart lead. and South, the declarer, followed with the jack.

West held four apades to the ten spot and if the declarer hip- pened to hold the ace, king, jack, West could make no spade tricks. Of course if Enst held one of the honours, then West's ten would minke. A club or a heart lead would give the declearer an easy game but West decided to try and find at least the seven of spades in his partner's hand and returned the seven of diamonds. A small club in discarded from dummy and East trumped with the seven of spades which forced South, the de- elarer, to over-trump with the jack of spades. This play established the ten spot for West, and while the declarer did cash all of the clubs and all of the hearts he was forced to lose one apade trick and this set his contract une trick.
