These vastly improved means of which have ro- communication, volutionfeed to a great extent life in the Colony, may be considered under the following heads:

(1) The Peak Tramway, oponed on the 1st May 1888, on which date the buildings at the Peak con- slated of about two dozen houses, some of them merely wooden bun- galowe, whilst the then Ponk Hotel At that time there were at the contained only seven bedrooms.. (II) The Hongkong Tramways, and half the waters of the Lyce-built in 1902 and the following man pass, were under jurisdiction.

In 1888, the only important dis trict in British Kowloon, as it was then called to distinguish it from Chinese Kowloon, was Yaumati, and the census of 1891 shows that the population of British Kowloon was then just under 20,000 per-

(iv) Since 1912 the following Important motor-roads have been minde during the governorship of the late Sir Henry May and his

Sir Edward successor, namely, the circular motor road from Kowloon vin Castle Peak to Fanling, returning by way of Tai- po to Kowloon, the motor rond round the Island with its branch Rond to Shek O, and the Stubbs to the Peak with its branch to Re- pulse Bay. Also, a motor-road up to the mid-levels has been built.

a

These roads have enabled resi- dences to be built in outlying parts of the Colony, which were previous- ly inaccessible, Including the Re- pulse Bay Hotel (built in what was formerly very lonely bay). Motor roads have also been the means of granting facilities for bathing from the land both on Hongkong Island and the mainland, whereas previously bathing had taken place almost exclusively from stenm-launches. And very pleasant some of those moonlight plenice

Motor roads have also been the occasion of the starting of numer ous well-run motor-bas enterprises on both sides of the harbour, and incidentally of helping to develop

The University.

The University of Hongkong, which was built with moneys given by the late Sir Harmusjce Mody. was opened in 1912 by Sir Fro- derick (now Lord) Lugard.
