HONGKONG CELEBRATION OF EMPIRE DAY

SPECIAL EFFORT TO ENCOURAGE IMPERIAL TRADE

EMPIRE DAY, which is being observed to-morrow wherever the British flag flies, is the anniversary of the birth of the late Queen Victoria. It has been officially recognised since. 1903, when the late Earl of Meath, a great patriot, inaugurated the festival as a means of training British children in good citizenship. With the march of time, the occasion has been marked with ever-widening enthusiasm, and this year a special effort is being made to draw attention to the resources of the Empire and to encourage inter-Empire trade. In Canada, the day is observed as Victoria Day, being a national holiday. THE EMPIRE FOOD

MOVEMENT.

Appeal to British Housewives.

The "Empire Meals on Empire Day" movement, in which Hong- king will share to-morrow, was initiated by n women's committee of the Fellowship of the British Em- pire. In the Old Country, the. Royal Households have given their approval to the movement, while the wives of the civic heads of each town have agreed to help in forwarding the iden. ILR.H. the Prince of Wales is the President of the Fellowship, while Iler Majesty the Queen has cordially lent her support to the movement. Moreover, the sympathy of the Do- minion and Colonial Offices has been nasured, while the Depart ment of Agriculture and Fisheries, as well as Chambers of Commerce, have given the plan their support.

The Home Country Committee Includes members with special links with all parts of the Over- seus Empire-Lady Jellicoe (Em-

e Day Movement), and Lady Davson and Lady Morgan (British Empire Producers' Association). Mrs. Florence Amery, wife of a former Secretary of State for the Colonies, is the Chairman of the Committee, whilst here in Hong kong Lady Peel headed the move- ment until she left for Home, since when Mrs. W. T. Southòrn has un- | dertaken to discharge the duties of the office.

LOCAL COMMITTEE. Locally, the movement has been taken up most energetically, a ape- cini Empire Day Committee having been formed, with the Hon. Mr. W. E. Shenton as Hon. Secretary. Franklin, Mr. Green, Mr. A. Hicks. Mr. Hawkins, Ludy Clara Ho Tung, Mrs. J. Owen Hughes, Mrs. R. II. Kotewall, Mr. Maclaren, Mr. G. P. de Martin, the Hon. Sir Henry Pollock, the Hon. Sir Shouson Chow, Very Rev. Denn Swann, Mr. Stopani Thompson, the Hon. Dr. S. W. Tao, Mr. J. H Taggart, Mr. Tang Shui-kin, Misa Westland, Capt. Webb, Mra. A. H. Walker, Mrs. Kinnard Watson. Mr. Williams and Mr. S. T. Williamson, The main feature of the Hong- kong observances is the Empire Products Fair, which is being opened at the Peninsula Hotel this afternoon. The Chairman of the Fair Sub-Committee is the Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga, who has had the willing assistance of many helpers, thus assuring the success of the function. Hobgkong's first celc- bration of the Empire Day move- ment on a big, organised scale will assuredly be long remembered.
