The Bidding.

At either auction or contract. South, the dealer, would open with one no trump, West pass. At nie- tion, North would pass, but at cop. tract, having three sulla stopped and what is known as a Cavendish distribution-that is, a distribu. tion of four, three, three, three- he jumps the contrnet to three no. trump. All pass.

The Play.

West's proper opening is hin fourth best heart--the five spot. Dummy plays the seven and Eas covers with the queen, declarer winning the trick with the ac South. the declarer, immediately establishes his club suil by lend ing the queen which West is forced to win with the ace. The jack of hearts is returned by West and won by the declarer with the king. The declarer lends the eight of clubs for the next trick, West discarding the four of spades, dummy winning the trick with the king of clubs, and Easi following with the three of clubs. Now the six of clubs is returned from dummy, East playing the five declarer the nine and West discards the six of spades. Now the jack of clubs is led by the de- clarer, and fortunately for h the West player was one who be Heved in discarding high carda la show his strong suit. West plays the eight of diamonds, dummy the ten of clubs and East plays his last club-the seven spot.

The declarer now reasons that West does not hold the king cr queen of spades or he would not have discarded hin two small spades. He undoubtedly holds the queen and fuck of diamonds. De clarer further reasons that West should also have a small diamond. The only point in question la: did West originally hold four or five hearts? If he originally held five hearts, he now holds but a single ton spade. The only chance the declarer has to go game in to find WCHL with a singleton apade. Therefore, declarer plays a umali spade to duony's ace, West fol lowing with the seven spot and East the three.

The declarer's next play is the eight of hearts, deliberately throwing West in the lead to make his three good hourts. On West's three heart tricks, the declarer discards his three spades and the jack and eight of spades in, dum- my. It makes no differenen what East discards. West is now help. les. If he leads a small diamond. the declarer will allow it to ride to his nine apol and win the Inst two tricks with the ace and king of diamonds. If the queen of dia- monds is led by West, declarer will win it with the uce and then- take the diamond finesse in dan my.

By correctly reading West's hand and then deliberately throw- ing him in the lead so that he could cash three good tricks the declarer makes a elever end play that allows him to make his con- tract of three no trump...
