South, the dealer opened the bid ding with th diamond. West passed. As North knows that bis partner will not open without two and one-half quick tricks, he can easily rend that South must hold the king and queen of diamonds, and the ace of clubs. The ques tion is whether he holds the king of clubs or the queen and jack of either hearts or sondes. North In- vites a slam by bidding four no South then shows his five- 1rump. card suit by bidding five clubs.

The bidding of five clubs by South practically assures North that South originally held four diamonds which must have been headed by at least king, queen in order to be biidable, and five etuba. Undoubtedly the club suit is headed by ace, king in order to establish the two and one-half mufck tricks for an original hid. North enn cnally nee 13 tricks and immediately bids seven no trump.
