Those Heavy Dollars.

To the Editor, Hongkong

Telegraph.1

Sir,With the arrival of the hot weather, the inconvenience of carrying about heavy silver dollars becomes more pronounced. I don't know whether others feel about it as much no I do, but it is very annoying when changing a "ave-dollar note to have to carry about three or four of these big silver coins in one's pockets.

Visitors often complain about this, saying that nowhere else do they have to put up with such an inconvenience.

Could not the Banks relieve us from this burden? There may be a restriction on the note fasue.

but, if not, could not the Banks be induced to put more one-dollar notes in circulation? I feel sure that everybody would feel thank- fut for such relief-Yours, etc.

HOT AND TIRED.

The Water Shortage.

Sir-It would be interesting to ex-know why, after all the time, troubic, expense and official "back. patting" over putting the pipe line the Harbour for, water, cross there should still be this serious shortage.

If i remember right a big "Do" was staged in Statue Square at the official opening some months ago and we were told "No more water shortage",

Washington, Apr. 14. Mr. Alfred Smith's proposal that America should forget about Euro- pean debts for 20 years, and should write off sums equal to 25 per cent. of the value of American goods purchased by Europe, has not received wide attention here.

Opponents of the schemo describe it as thinly disguised cancellation, and consider that the approval given it by the Wall Street interests in the party is sufficient condemna-

Senators who comment privately on the proposals dismiss them as impracticable.
