Sir William Hornell remarked, amid laughter: I had hoped to be able to hand over to my illustrious colleague (Hon. Mr. Ts'o) on my right at once, hut he, being a lawyer, has discovered a rule which states that the new President does not take office until July 1. I am afraid you will have to bear with me until then. I mention this because if anyone has come with a bouquet for the retiring Chairman, he will have to keep it.--(Laughter).

Mr. Powell: We are perfectly satisfied that the smaller children are using the grounds very freely, although it is very difficult to keep the bigger ones out. However, the smaller children get a good show. request for In answer to a opinions on the playgrounds ques- tion from Chinese members, the Hon. Dr. Tso said: The plny- ground acheme is one of the best way of curing the Chinese of the spitting habit. The climate of a place like Hongkong has a lot to do Gov-with this habit. By means of play- altes grounds we can make children's lunga clear by giving them fresh air, sunshine and exercise. As re- gards tuberculosin, it can be attack. ed by giving plenty of light and fresh air. If we tell people to opri their windows, it is not as good as providing then with playgrounds into the where they can get out open. From the Chinese point of view, therefore, we consider it is very important to have playgrounds and it is hoped that Rotarians will strongly support the scheme.

Woo and Dr. Li Dr. Arthur Sho-fan supported the scheme.

The Chairman: With reference to Notarian Ching's question, I wish to say that so far as these play- $9.060.00 grounds are used by sehook, they are unly used out of school hours. The recommendations of the have been to Wanchai acveral Limes when games are going on Committee to this meeting are:-

I am sorry, myself, that he is not continuing for another year, but I was one of the three who were with Joe Davidson in the initial stages of this Association, and be suid one of the principles of Ro- tarianism was, that as far as pos- sible, there should be a new body of 86 that there officers each year, would not be only one body running the Association. At Mongkok, which is also getting to be a crowded place, the ground is a very good.one and is considerably larger than the one we have in Wanchai. I think the amount set out in the schenie will cover the work very nicely for out year and i do not think it is neces- sary to bind the Club for more than one year at a time.

There are quite enough people in Ilongkong who are interested in this particular work, but the Rotary Club is a very strong organisation, and I consider that the raising of $4,000 is well within the means of the Club.

As regards the second recommen- dation, the same management

We have a very well qualified playground man who has not only had experience here but also abroad, and our plan would be to superviso the work of the other three men, mentioned in the scheme, to see that their work was done properly..

Sir Wm. Hornell's Reply. Sir William Hornell: Iam very much obliged to you, Rotarlan Shenton, for the nice things you have said about me and for the way in which this club has received them. I am not, however, going to make a speech about the Rotary Club or my work in it, because we have other business to deal with to day.

There is one thing, and I feel very strongly on It, which is that I have enjoyed very much indeed the opportunities which the Rotary Club has given me for making friendships. I think I can honestly say that there has not been a single mcoting of the Rotary Club which I personally, have not enjoyed thoroughly understand, I there (Applauas), I have had opportuni- fore propose to have the schemo tica of making friends. with people printed in the next bulletin and it I probably should otherwise not can be voted upon at the next meet- have met and such opportunities ing of the Club. have been very much appreciated by
