CONTRACT BRIDGE

Secretary, American Bridge League.

By W. E. McKenney,

TELEGRAPH. WEDNESDAY, MAY: 4, 1932.

Under the writer's system of contract bidding, the requirements for original bids are slightly higher than those used in most other systems, due to the fact that the two and one-half quick tricks- required to make an opening bid Νο must be real quick tricks. combinations of honors such as king, jack, 19; king, juck; or ace. jack, 10, are used to arrive at the necessary two and one-half quick tricks.

MR. LI YAU-TSUN' THREATENED.

ALLEGED AUTHOR OF TWO LETTERS - CHARGED

Д

The case against Yuch Ning. charged with sending two threat- oning letters to Mr. Li Yau-taun, demanding money, reached further atago before Mr. Wynne- Jones at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon.

Committal of the accused is being asked for by the Police, and in a statement which he made after being cautioned, the accused: deal Bench to implored the summarily with him, asking that a Jonient view be taken of this, his first offence in 25 years' re- sidence in the Colony.

He declared that he had not received any money from Mr. L' hia not suffered on had who account, or through any act of! hla. Whatever he had done tricks

this occasion was done through the impulse of a moment.

fact op-

naturally follows that the It stronger the requirements are for an original bid, the weaker part- ner's hand may be to keep the bidding open.

quick that posite two quick will not produce a game, although they may produce a partial score. Under the McKenney system of contract bidding it would be pos- Rible for hands of this type to be passed out due to the fact that neither partner would hold two and one-half quick tricks. Thore- fore in rubber bridge a player is in no danger in requiring this real In for opening hids. strength duplicate contract occasionally, but rarely, players using high re- quirements for opening bids will pass a hand out that will produce a plus score, but until the scoring of duplicate contract is changed to make it a good duplicate game, one should not change their sys tem for this particular phase of tir gate.

Keeping Original One Bids Open for Your Partner Whe

macie Ar partner has original bid or une no trump, as stated above, he informs you that he has a definite pitch count dis tributed in three saits or twa andl in one-half quick tricks, and neither ease a good biddable four- Card suit. Assuming that there has been ne interveniny bid; you skuld support partner's no trump to two no trump with a combined Count of 22, and to Over no tramp with a combined

nt 21.

If you take out 1 of one 1243 trump with two of a auit, you ad- vise partner that your hand is weak and that you will lose less tricks at the suit you me than he will playing it al no trump. If you have a strong four-card ma jor suit or a good five-card snit. take partner out with jump bid

to three of a suit so that he will know you are not bidding from weakness. When

partner has made original bid of one of a suit un- der this system of bidding, you must remember that partner may be bidling his four-card suit first, but he has told you that he hold two and one-half quick tricks.

The majority of hands will pro- duce at least two odd played in either direction unless the bands themselves. definitely establish Fürthermore as, under this sys tem of bidding, two bids are not made unless they are power house hands, you must give partner a chance to rebid.

bids

When holding one and one-half tricks and a biddable suit you may be able to use the One Over One which will be explained in our next article. But at all times, when holding at least two queens or a king and a jack, or an ace, give partner a chance to rebid by bidding one no trump, which is a denial response to all original suit of one. I immediately Warns partner that from your hand you cannot see any possi- bility of game. Occasionally it may hold one and one-half quick tricks, but it does not contain one and one-half quick tricks and a biddable suit or two quick tricks. The point that the writer wish- es to bring out in to-day's article is that original suit bids of one are kept open by partner with a one no trump bid-even though the hand does not contain one and one-half tricks, but does contain the equivalent of two queens.

The accused was cautioned in respect of two charges on which committal was suggested and he denied having written the second) of the two letters, asking that a more competent handwriting ex-i pert should be called to testify to the caligraphy on the two rex- pective epistles.

A Query.

After having signified that he had closed his statement, the accused hesitated when asked to sign it, and returned the declara- tion to the Magistrate, remarking that he had a further amplification le make.

Yuen Ning apologetically ex- plained that his mind was much confused. Pursuing his appeal for the case not to be taken before the Supreme Court, he sald he thought his Worship would agree with him that it was quite In ordinary спас concerning merely two letters.

He asked also whether he would be convicted on the two latters he addressed to Mr. Li Yau-tsun from Victoria Gaol after his arrest, asking Mr. Li's pardon for having sent those two communica- tions which the Police held were threatening.

WOR

The question Wha left On- answered, and the accused naked to get on with his state- ment.

Finally. be said he would like to call witnesses to speak as to his character, assuring the Bench that they know him quite well: and the case was again adjourned to enable the Police to arrangel for their attendance at the next sitting, fixed for Friday after-

noon.
