The recommendations of the Committee to this meeting are:-

1. That the present work be maintained.

Mr. Wu and Dr. Li Shu-fan sup- ported the scheme.

The Chairman: With reference to Rotarian Ching's question, I wish at these play- to say that so far 17,960.00 grounds are used by schools, they are only used out of school hours, I have been to Wanchal several times when

games are going on there. At one end of the play- ground where there are swings and other things, there were a large number of small children and I think anyone who goes down there nt any time of the day will find that there are a number of children playing on the swings and seesaws. The work is just beginning and the mare organisation the directors can introdice the better.

2. That two new grounds, as above, be applied for.

3. That the present arrangement with the Chinese Y.M.C.A. be con- tinued.

4. That the amount required be raised from members of the Club by voluntary contribution.

Only Beginning.

We have been told by a number of brother Rotarians who have visited us from other parts from China and Japan-that they thought the most difficult in the Far East to start a Rotary Club would Mr. J. L. MacPherson: I have be longkong, but they were sur gone

this very carefully into prised to see what a successful or- scheme, and, as far as what was ganisation we have been able to

done last year is concerned, I look form in this Colony. I, myself, feel on it only as a beginning: that this that the auccess of this Club ís, in | Club or someone else should extend a very large measure, due to the this playground work, year by year, hand which guides it.—(Applause.) | until there is room for as many as

this association because we all know That at Blake Gardens ia it. It is that of our President, | in a Rotarian Hornell.—(Applause).

I am sorry, myself, that he is not continuing for another year, but I was one of the three who were with Jon Davidson in the Initial stages of this Association, and he said one of the principles of Ro- tarianism was, that as far as pos- Isible, there should be a new body of officers each year. Ho that there would not be only one body running the Association. If it had been for that am quite sure that Sir Wil liam Hornell would probably have continued for another year.

district which is thickly congested and the streets crowded with people. At Mongkok, which is also getting to be a crowded place, the ground is a very good one and is considerably larger than the one we have in Wanchai. I think the amount set out in the scheme will cover the work very nicely for one year and i do not think it la neces- sary to bind the Club for more than one year at a time,

There are quite enough people in Hongkong who are interested in this particular work, but the Rotary Club is a very strong organisation, and I consider that the raising of $1,003 is well within the means of the Club.

Such being the position, and such the success that this Club has at- tained, I feel I am expressing the feelings of all of you in telling our

I think this, also, is son of his personal efforts.~(Ap | very satisfactory as the Chinese plause).

Sir Wm. Hornell's Reply. Sir William Hornell: I am very much obliged to you, Rotarian Shenton, for the nice things you have said about me and for the way in which this club has received them. I am not, however, going to make a speech about the Rotary Club or my work in it, because we have other business to deal with to day.

སྙ

Y.M.C.A. is interested in small play. ground work and while this Club ruised $2,000 last year the Chinese Y.M.C.A. spent $6,000, so it really did more than the Rotary Club.

We have a very well qualified playground man who has not only had experience here but also abroad, and our plan would be to supervise the work of the other three mon, mentioned in the scheme, to sea that their work was done properly.

Extension of Responsibility. There is one thing, and I feel very strongly on it, which is that

The Chairman: As this scheme I have enjoyed very much indeed involves a considerable extension the opportunities which the Rotary of the Club's responsibility, I do not Club has given me for making propose to put it to the vote at this friendships.
