COUPLE'S LIFE ON ARCTIC WASTE
BISHOP'S STORY OF ESKIMOS
The following remarkable exam- ple of the virility and endurance of the Eskimo la furnished by the "Bishop of the Arctic," Dr. Tur quetil, who is enjoying one of his rarò vacations "outside."
An Eskimo and his wife one day found themselves adrift on a small ko floe hended for parts unknown And they waited undismayed to ace what fortune would bring them.
Eventually their ice floe ground- ed on Mansel Island, a virtual de- sert 40 miles from the mainland, uninhabited and windswept. The Eskimo had a rifle, a few cartridges, some fish hooks, and his wife somo home-made needles-their only re-
sources.
With his few cartridges the hua- band killed some wild animals, and with his shing gear was able to lay in a stock of fish. Eventually all his ammunition and his fishing tackle were gone, but instond of sitting down and being frozen to about to death the Eskimo net adapt himself to the new condi- tions.
This he did by reverting to the life of the stone ago. With flint and bone he fashioned rough tools and weapons. For spear shafts he used pieces of hide which he nonk- ed in water and allowed to freeze, and from the apow in winter and the hides of animala in summer he built his living quartera.
The Return.
In spite of their difficult start the man and his wife prospered; children were born to them and they were happy.
But ono aummor the man and his wife felt a longing to see their friends again. After all, ten years Is a long time in the life of an Eskimo and the children were growing up. So they set about to build themselves a ferry.
Large bones from the skeletons of animals and seals and walruses were collected, and from them the man selected those best adapted to his purpose. His wife prepared leather thongs with which to hind the hones together, and soon there arose on the shore of Mansel Is- land the framework of one of the strangest craft that ever sailed the Arctic sens,
Over the bones the man and his wife fixed many waterproof seal skins, and from the same material fashioned a crude sail.
Eventually favourable time arrived and the family pushed off for the mainland where they ar
welcomed rived safely and were
by friends they had not seen for a decade.

One wash might ruin those ».
expensive stockings
BUT YOU TAKE NO RISKS WITH LUX!
You can't try new soaps without
running the grave risk of spoiling the things you wash. it is, too late to be sorry after the damage is done. Too often just ONE wash will fade colours, make silks yellow, and shrink woollen garments alarmingly.
You have to pay so much for slik stockings and pretty lingerie, that it is shoer extravagance to risk washing them in any ordinary soap. Especially when you know for certain that they will be safe in LUX.
But do make sure that it IS Lux. Nothing else is quite so safe. Other soap flakes may LOOK pure, and still contain just sufficient harmful alkali to fade and destroy an expensive garment.
