NEW LIGHT SIGNAL. An Elaborate Automatic

British System.

NOW BEING tried.

An interesting elaboration of the now widely used automatic system of light control for traffic is being tested in Great Britain. It is in- tended for installation mainly at Intersections where traffic is com- paratively light, for the purpose of eliminating the unnecessary which occurs when chrs approach- Ing the intersection are stopped by the ordinary medlight, even when there is no traffle approaching the intersection in the other street.

A strip of metal is let into each of the four approaches to the in- Lersection, about 50 yards from it. This strip is really "contact strip," such as is used for the electrical timing of racing motor cars. When a car approach-

HEAVY OIL ENGINES FOR BURY'S DOUBLE-DECKERS.

Passenger transporation at Home is being revolutionised by the almost univerant conversion of petrol omnibuses to heavy oil driven vehicles. The above picture shows one of the fleets of double-deckers belonging to the Bury Corporation. These machines carry 50 passengers and have entirely replaced petrol driven bases. The saving in fuel is considerable. The engines are bullt by the famous firm of Crossley who have supplied the heavy oll power units for bus fleet for Man, chester, Rochdale, Leeds, York. Bary. Sheffield, Aberdeen, Stockton, Stockport, Leigh, Edin-" burgh, Card, Portsmouth and many other cities, as well as for hundreds of private haulage firms. It is interesting to note that one of the Hongkong Hotel buses is at present giving most satisfac- tory results following the conversion from a petrol engine to one of the Crossley heavy oil types.
