CINEMA SCREENINGS.
NOTES SUPPLIED BY THE
THEATRES.
It's a far Juing from mechanical engineer to filin comedian, but the transition Was accomplished by Spencer Charters, stage and kereen acter who has scored so heavily in the Patho pleture "Lonely Wives," direct. ed by Russell Mack which is now on
view at the Central Theatre.
More than thirty years ago Char- ters was studying mechanical eng- ineering in Harrisburg, Pa. He hung around the stage doors of local stock companies so much at night that he was frequently late for classes in the morning. When, in self defence against his nightly visitor, the stage manager of one company offered him the choice of a job or taking himself away, Charters accepted the former. Since school interfered with matinees, a week later he blew a farewell kina to the possibility of a M. F. degree hin lot with matters
and threw thespian.
After several years with repertoire and stock companies, Charters landed on Broadway where he occupied an outstanding position for a quarter of a century, until he went West to play the same role in "Whoopee," which he had created on the Mage. Now the veteran actor han deserted the stage for screen work.
In "Lonely Wives" Charters is one of a notable cast headed by Edward Everett Herton and which includes Esther Ralston, Laura La Plaale. Patey Ruth Miller and Maude Eburne, another newcomer from Broadway.

"Jim Carston is beloved both by actors and the public because he has several situations, four in fact, which show him in elemental emotional situations which happen frequently in everyday life; namely, self-sacrifice to protect a woman he foven; second, protection by man, the stronger, of a woman, the weaker sex; third, the ranting call; fourth the call on both the white father und the Indian mother, of the twin instincts of mother and father love.
