THE CITY HALL.
CONDEMNED AS BEING
UNSAFE.
TELEGRAPH. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31. 1931.
The City Hall, on account of ita ngo, las rouched a stage where it will shortly be unsafe for public
uno, it was lourned yesterday.
A report made by the Firo Brigade authorities, together with a confirmatory statement by architects of City Hall Committee, make it perfectly clear that the building cannot remain in its pre- sent state very much longer with- out extensive changes being put in hand.
"It appears that lack of funds necessary to effect the alterations which are demanded, places the City Hall Committee in the posi tion of being unable to carry out the work. At the moment, the Gov- ernment has the matter in hand, and ita decision is being awaited.
Mr. Shenton Explains. Yesterday, the Hon. Mr. W. E. L. ; Shenton, a member of the City Hall Committee made an authori tative statement on the subject In the following terms;
"A report having been made by the Fire Authority staling that the building (City Hall) is unsafe, and a danger in the event of fire, the Committee of the City Hall feels it cannot accept the ponsibility of having the very siderable repairs car.
carried out. "The Committee has very limited funds at its disposal which do not allow of it carr
carrying out the tensive alterations, and in the face of the advice received the members of the Committee feel they cannot accept the responsibilty of allow- ing engagementa in the City Hall in the near future.

Whole Building Concerned. Asked if the report of the Fire Authorities included the whole of the building, the Hon. Mr. Shenton replied "red", and said that in- dications were that both the Library Museum and the Public would be closed in the new year unless,
less, of course, the necessary at- kention was given to the building.
agreed that the "Chcero" Y.M.C.A.. would also be affected and would almost certainly have to
move.
Enquiries made by our repre- sentative yesterday elicited the reply from Mrs. L. C. F. Bellamy, Chairman of the Ladies' Committer of the "Cheero" Club, the fact that i they had received unofficial intima
tion to quit at a month's notice, So far as she knew, however, ከብ official notice to TROVO had yet been given.
WEST POINT'S FATE.
COMPLAINT TO CHINESÉ CHAMBER.
At the monthly meeting of the Chinese General Chamber of Com-) merce yesterday afternoon tho Secretary, Mr. Lee Wen-kom, read letters from the Restaurants' Al- sociation, the Sharks' Fin Dealers' Association, the Fish and Vego- table Mongers' Association and Mr. Ho lu protesting against the Government decision for the pro- scription of prostitution in West Point. The Chairman, Mr. Wong Kwong-tin, promised that those letters would be forwarded, as the associations desired, to the Chin- ese representatives on the Legis- lative Council with a view to ap- proaching the Government,
The association's und Mr. He Iu's letters express unanimous appre ciation of the Government's desiro to improve morality, but they ex- press doubt over the serious effect which this proscription will have on the restaurants and other trade lines whose business is closely connected with West Point. These letters say that the official decision may even produce in- mediate effects on the value of house property in West Point, and may throw hundreds of labour ers in restaurants out of employ ment. They appeal to the au- thorities for a postponement of the proscription, taking into considera. tion the effect which it may have on trade.
