STRANGE CLOSING-

TIME SCENE.

London, Nov. 16.

Mrs. Snowden was involved in an extraordinary closing-time scene last night at a West End restaurant, nt which the annual dinner of the Guild of Singers and Players was held.

Herself a great music lover, Mrs. Snowden was in the chair. Many of the best-known singers and in- strumentalists of the day were pre- sent, and Mr. John Goss was about to sing.

It was just on 10.80, and clos- lag time in the West End on Sun- day nights is 10 o'clock.

Suddenly'a number of waitera and waitresses poured into the room, and

started clearing away bottles and glasses, thus causing a clatter.

"Plense Go Away."

Mr. Goss waited patiently for silence for some moments and then Mrs. Snowden said to the waiters and waitresses, "Will you please go away; we want to go on with our concert."

The waiters seemed not to hear. They went on clearing away.

Mrs. Snowden said again: "W you retire? We want to go ahend,”

Then the head waiter went to Ales. Snowden and spoke to her. "But you can't clear them away," she was heard to say.

"I must." said the head waiter. "Then hurry." was Mrs. Sauwe den's reply.

Mr. Goss whe still waiting to sing, and there, were protests from those present.

"Do please hurry." repented" Mrs. Snowden after another paune. "I really do not see why you must clear away glasses containing water and lemonade. We have our foasts lo drink."

Mrs. Snowden's Comment.

But still they cleared away and Ir. Go waited.

Proposing her health Mr. Cyril Scott said, "I really don't know what we are going to drink it in, as the County Council or whoever it is insists on treating us like children, and saying “You have had enough to drink!"

Every glass had gone from the tible when the riteste rose to drink Mrs. Snowden's health, and they simply bowed to her.

Later an official of the restaurant explained that closing time on Sun- day nights was 10 o'clock, and that they had no option but to clear away. They had been warned,,he reddetl.
