When all is sald and done, there. ia a natural' and quite reasonablo tendency for people everywhore to form themselves into groups in their social life, on the principle: that like gravitates to like. No man or woman can be expected to find either pleasure or benefit in continuously consorting with those whose Idean and outlook on life run contrary to their own. Everyone has the right to make his or her But to own circle of friendships. any so much in not to deny the fact that the superiority complex does obtrude itself far too much; whilst at the other end of the scale we have the type of individual who is always on the look-out for slights and who, if the truth be told, often imagines a patronising attitude on the part of others where none is intended. In there matters. It is easy to bulieve just what we want to believe. The great need is for people to be their natural selves, neither scorning the lowly nor apeing those shove them in station or culture. We cannnt, however much we mny wish it, wipe out social distinc
IF YOU LIVED IN RUSSIA
THE TOPSY <TURVY LAND DE THE SOVIETS
AS.SEEN BY JULIA BLANSHARD
When you travel in Russia, you should travel as the Russians do, and that is "hard." "Hard" is the iteral translation of the third class, "zbostky." It describes quite accurately the board alicif on which you sleep when you travel in a third class carriage. There are two other choices for you besides hard," the costly wagon lits which afford you luxurious, spacious compartments, with semi-private wash rooms; and "soft" (myakhat"), or second-class cars, which juve upholstered compartments that can be made into presentable beds. with disinfected sheets, pillow slips and blankets by paying the train gu d. "pravdnik," three roubles.
Fravelling third is a distinctive experience, as discovered when I ocupled my wooden shelf for eight days crossing Siberia from China. These, third Class cars have no enclos ed compartments. A corridor runs down one side of each eur and at right angles to it, across the car, sections of wooden sents are built, exactly like wide pantry shelves, iri tlers of three on either side of the windowa, with each ebelt far enough above the one below if to allow even a tali adult to sit ervet.

There may be food shortages in the cities of Soviet Russia, but there is apparently none in the rural sections, for every time Julia Blanchard's train stapped vendors like these came alongside. They sold hard boiled eggs, roast chicken, bread and butler-and almost gave it away!
