NAVY BOXING CHAMPIONS.

LAST NIGHT'S KEEN FIGHTING.

FAVOURITES WIN ALL ALONG THE LINE. Several of Hongkong's best known boxere took a successful part in the China Fleet Boxing Championships held at the City Hall last night, when fighters as A. B. Warnes, Sig. Morris, Stok- er Lake and A. B. Rowles, all of wwhom have tought title bouts in the Colony, fgured among the win- ners.

As a whole the boxing did not reach the high level generally aasociated with Naval Champion- ships, but the evening's programme lacked little in entertainment, and the almost enpacity "house" fully enjoyed the amirited displays given by the seamen.

Signsman Morria did not re- vent the same form as when he defeated Warnes last Saturday, and only just managed to scrape home to win the middleweight title. Both his opponents, A. B. Barber and A. B. Thompson put up extremely good fights, and the lack of experience Was the

greatest faclor against them.

Warnes won the welterweight, with a fair amount of ense, and A. B. Rowles of Medway had a farcical match with A. B. Reeman) (H. M. S, Bruce), administering) the K. O. in the first round.

For sheer good boxing, the best! fuht of the evening was that be! tween A. B. Atkey (Berwick) and A. B. Judge (Cornwall), who mot over three rounds in the heavy- weight class. Athey secured the ver- dict, and won the title us a result of i C. P. O. Francis withdrawing from the final on medical advice.

The ten trophy was captured by H. M. S. Hermes, who totalled 29 points, and they were followed by II. M. S. Berwick (26), H.M.S.) Suffolk (18). HLM.S. Kent (16), HM.S. Medway and submarines (15), H.M.S. Cornwall (10), H.M.S. Tamar and anal ships (6).

The prizes were afterwards dis- tributed to the winners and ran- ners-up by Admiral Sir Howard Kelly,

Final, Lake out- Sykees, of the well known sports pointed Robinson. manufacturers of that name, who la acknowledged to be one of the world's greatest authorities on English willow, has again sounded a note of warning against the fad of cricketers prefer- ring white bats. So persistent is this demand becoming that certain mang- facturers of cricket bats are spec aily treating the willow to bleach it, thus ensuring that their bats will meet the popular demand.

In their own interests, cricketers are advised not to continue this demand, because the chemical action necessary to attain this perfect whiteneas is bound to have an adverse effect on the quality of the wood. Besides this, im- mediately cricketers purchase their |bats, they must oil them well, before uss, with the natural result that the wood becomes a light brown colour. Every batsman continues to keep his bat well oiled, which tends to darken the colour, so the preference for pure white blade seems absurd.

As Mr. Sykes has proved conclusive- ly that this bleaching is very de- trimental to cricket, it is bia definite intention to refuse to allow any willow to bleached at the Horbury factories.
