DISCOVERIES IN A SETTLEMENT. ·
CATTLE-BREEDERS & MEAT EATERS.
The excavation of the ancient British settlement of Salmonsbury, arijoining Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucenterahire, has been under taken
by the Anthropological Society of University Collere, London. under the direction of Mr. Gerald Dunning, of the Society of Antiquaries.
The settlement, which has an area of 66 acres, must have heid somewhere about a thousand in- habitants, and Is regarded by experts as the most important forti- fod eite of the Iron Age in Britain which has boon acleatifically examined.

A complete hut measuring 23 feet in diameter has been uncover- ed, and there are indications that a row of adjoining huts may be ex- pected to be found when work is continued next season

"There is double draining trench on the inner side of the hut, which probably served to remove the roof wrter from a whole row of huts. Immediately outside the hut in a rubbish pit, and a little fur- ther away a number of other pita, which were probably uned for storaga.
"Two built-up stone hearths were found at a distance of 12 feet. The small size of the pottery cook- ing utensils may be an indication that meat was generally roasted.

They confirm the conclusion that the village was inhabited by the more back ward Celts of Wessex rather than by the Belgae whose remains are found in South-East England.
