• PRIME MINISTER'S MESSAGĖ TO THE NATION.

The Prime Minister has also issued a message to the Nation, in which, after thanking the millions of all parties who supported the National Government at the polls and subordinated for a moment party feel- ings to the National needs, he says: "The Majority is as unique as it is gratifying. It must convince the whole world that when Britain calls for assistance willing hands and developed minds will always re- spond heartily. The very emphasis of the response is embarrassing, but I appeal for forbearance as weil- as confidence.

"If the people see that our task is difficult we will also give them ample evidence that the Govern- ment is facing it with sincerity and that men who may not see eye to eye on ordinary political questions are united heart and soul in finding the best way to overcome the present troubles.

"To my political friends who have suffered such unusual reverses, and especially to those of them who with splendid faith and courage backed our appeal and helped to swell our victory, I give an assurance that our triumph will in no way mean that the in- terests of the working classes will be overlooked in the performance of the task before us."

THE unprecedented completeness of the National Government's electoral victory, foreshadowed by yesterday's results, has been emphasised by latest returns, When Parliament meets on November'. 10, the Government will have a majority of over 500!

The great majority of results have now been declared-only seven are out- standing-and it is apparent that when the King's Speech is read, the Government will have the support of 560 members, the opposition being represented by about

The only members of the late Labour Government who retained their seats as Official Labour candidates were Mr. George Lansbury, Major Attlee and Sir Stafford Cripps. It is thought likely that Mr. Lansbury will lead the Labour Party in the new Parliament.

TALE OF CONSERVATIVE SOLIDITY COMPLETE.

The tale of Conservative solidity, told by London divisions like St. Pancras, Wands- worth, and Leyton, by industrial centres like Hull, Sunderland, Wednesbury, and Salop, and by the sweep of the Conservative colours through Lancashire, whose eighteen divisions re- turned five more Tories und seven less Labourites, applies equally to the counties.

CHESHIRE, DEVONSHIRE, DORSETSHIRE, ESSEX, HAMPSHIRE HERTFORD, KENT, SOMERSET, WARWICKSHIRE, WILTSHIRE, WORCESTER AND MIDDLE. SEX ARE ALL SOLIDLY FOR THE GOVERNMENT.

The Welsh boroughs and counties have retained their Liberal tastes; but the most surprising turnover has occured in Glasgow, where there are fifteen seats. These were previously held by ten Labour representatives and five Conservatives. After Tuesday's........ debacle. Glasgow is represented by ton Conservatives, four Labour MPs and one Indepen-
