Bale, Aug. 19. Germany's short term debt is at present 7,400,000,000 marks, ne cording to the report of the Inter- national Committee of Bankers, which estimates that during the.
months short term last seven credits up to 2,000,000,000 marka have been withdrawn from Ger- many.
The report states, infen elin, that foreign creditors have agreed with German debtors that only a cer tain proportion of their available assets in marks will be realised im- mediately, the remainder to be rea Hised gradually. THE FAILURE OF PRICE
TO MEASURE QUALITY
For his dollar the buyer receives sometimes good quality, Rometimes bad, and all variations in between; sometimes much for his money in quantity, sometimes little. The dollar is an adventurer's Barque that may come home from the market with colours flying, or may be wrecked on a hidden reef.
Twenty three representativo carburetors were recently tested in the engineering laboratorios of one of the world's lead- ing Universities. Just four of them adhered closely to what might be considered good all-round performance. Some were good for only one kind of operation, such as idling, level road driving, or hill climbing, or fór, vno sinall-range of speeds, A. few had characteristics exactly the opposite of those which a reasonable specification would require. Forty per cent of the carburetors would not perform alike on different trials. Only one quarter of them permitted the engine to 'develop ita full- power; one third of them caused large curtailment of engine output through unnecessary pressure losses. Thus a lovice conting only a few dollars to make, throttles the performance of an engine worth a hundred times as much. The authors of the carburetor testa observa,· "Some motorcar manufacturers purchase their carburetors. more on the basis of price than performance. The difference in price between the more efficient and the other carburetors is usually, no small that the added cost is ́negligible.” ..
What has been sald about the carburetor tests may well. apply to lubricating oil tests, for it is a fact that only about one lubricating all out of ten will permit the engine to develop full power, it is also a fact that we employ not less than forty qualified automotive engineers, whose duty it is to work with motorent manufacturers in order to ascertain the correct grade of Gargoyle Mobiloil for the lubrication of their engines. The result in that well over six hundred of the world's leading makers of motorcars either recommend or approve the use of -Mobiloll,--
