No...EARNINGS!

IF, for example, you make your next shipment VIA SEATTLE and thereby save the several days in transit, you will natur- ally think that you have saved money. But rather, you have earned money...earned it by strategy, by figuring on which port in America is nearest to the Orient.

Scattle has always enjoyed a geo- graphic position favorable to Orient- al shippers. This city invites you to learn the facts—to obtain complete information of how other shippers are using Seattle to their advantage. The best facilities are yours in the seven great public terminals..... your accommodations from Seattle include six transcontin- . ental railroads, serving sever teen transpacific steamship lines...

THE THORBURN OURTAGE.

GAOL ESCAPE:

BRITISH ATTITUDE HARDENS.

London, July 27. - Sir Miles Lampson has been instructed to take the Thorburn case to Marshal Chiang Kai-shek since His Majesty's Government must insist upon the proper, pro- tection of British subjects," nn. nounced Dr. II. Dalton, la reply to questions to-day in the House of Commona,

Dr. Dalton said Sir Miles Lamp- son had been instructed to make re- presentations to the Chinese Gay- ernment in the following sense?

"Απ

Inquiry has established

reasonable doubt that Mr. Thorburn, who was under suspicion in

quarters

of

having shot and fatally wound- ed two Chinese gendarmes, was Arrested and handed over to the Chinese military authorities, who found means to silence witnesses with knowledge of the facts.

It is therefore the duty of the Chinese Government, firstly, to discover Thorburn's whereabouts and hand him over to the British If still alive; secondly, authorities, if suitably to punish any military authorities responsible for mas treating him or causing his death,

His Majesty's Government very strongly urge the Chinese Gov- ernment, with all expedition, to find a means of persuading the military authorities concerned of the urgent necessity of enabling the Chinese Government to carry out the or- dinary obligations of a civilised State

He added that Sir Miles Lampson had been fistructed to conv the foregoing as a special message to Chiang Kai-shek.

Mr. J. S. Wardlaw Milne (Coni,) suggested it was a question not of perunding the milliary authorities but of the Chinese Government or dering the Chinese authorities,

Dr. Dalton replied. "It is be- rause we desire ordera to be given to the proper quarters, and desire to go straight to the fount of au- thority, Chiang Kai-shek himself." --Router.
