Meanwhile, there comes to hand the official version)
of the tragic collision, containing a startling sugges- tion of a mistake by the officers of the s.s. Yuta.
The submarine, just before the crash, was turning | to port with the' Yuta on her starboard bow. Suddenly, the Yuta was seen to swing to starboard. She struck the submarine heavily at right angles, just forward of the conning tower, the Poseidon sinking by the bows within ten minutes. The U.S.S. LONDON POLITICAL CRISIS.
Liberals and Land Tax.
GOVERNMENT'S ULTIMATUM.
London, June 11.
A grave political crisis has cropped up following the sudden development of a deadlock between the Liberal and Labour Parties on the major issue of the Govern- ment's Land Tax proposals. There is serious threat of an early dissolution of Par liament as a consequence.
It is reported that the Govern- ment leaders yesterday issued an ultimatum to the Liberal leaders, that the official Liberal . amendment to the Bill, if per- sisted in; will be treated as a question of confidence.
The amendment in dùe to be. moved in the House of Commons jon Tuesday, next, and, if adopted, would practically wreek tho scheme by limiting the land tax to undeveloped land on the ground that otherwise the scheme would ¡violate traditional Liberal objec-
tions to double taxation."
It is
Already Taxed.
the Liberal objection that developed land is already sub- ject, indirectly, to income tax.
An offer by the Liberal Chief Whip to modify the wording of the amendment, provided the sub- įstance is retained, has not in any
way eased the situation.
Grave Responsibility.
the
The Labour Party organ, the Daily Herald, seeks to exlort a Liberal surrender by asserting that the Liberals, by causing the downfull of
Government, would assume responsibility for the destruction of the Land Tax Bill, the Indian Round Table Con- ference, the Disarmament Confor- ence and Electoral Reform.
Liberal Belief.
The Liberal journal, the News Chronicle, however, believes that Mr. Snowden is the principal stumbling block to an agresment, and says that if the amendment is carried, a general election will be averted by the withdrawal of the land tax proposals and the resignation of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.--Router.
