Chief Detective Inspector A, N. Reynolds said that in connexion with the preacht charge the defen- dant, who was formerly in the om-! ploy of the Vacuum Oll Company, left there in April and had since been running wild. He had given the Police much concern and yester- day it was known that he was at Deep Water Bay bathing. On the Police being sent for he was arrest
Dr. J. T. Smalley said that he heard about the accident at 6.40 He rang up Dra. Uttley and Court, but could not get them. He then hired a car and went to the the scene of the accident. At break in the road he met Mr. Walker, and from there they walked to the accident, arriving at about 7 p.m.
He found some passengers plined down at the rear end of the third conch and in the front of the fourth. All the serious eneualties were in the space between the middle half of the second conch and the middle of the fourth. He was quite satisfied that everything that could have been done was done. All his requests were met with im- mediate response by the railwayed. and police officials. They got out a woman by raising the fourth, coach, but she died Inter. A man and a boy had to be left all night as an operation that night was impossible owing to the conditions. He was quite satisfied with the work done by the railway ambulance people and others.
