petticoats return to style!

romance isn't as dead

:

as you may think it is, for sweet young things today are being taught the enchantment to be found in grandmother's frills and underskirts

HE petical influence has invaded the spring mode, to add enchant- went to all things feminine and to give that romantic aspect of other times to an age gone very, very modern.

The curious thing is how the best contemporary young things are dancing petticoats and loving them

To a girl who has never known long hair and never had a petticoat in her wardrobe, the thrill of a truly Fontani gown, with frills and lace and underpinnings. is unbelievable. They are what you might call falling for them and into them and becoming thereby far more enchanting than they were wont to be in practical sports things.

Probably the best possible aspect of the new petticoat influence is the quieting, Tady-fying effect it has upon girls who might have been termed a bit practical and undecorative before.

Petticoats make girls let their hair grow a bit longer, and make them get waves. They encourage them to indulge in all kinds of little extras like ostrich fans, per- fumery, real flowers, chiffoss handkerchiefs, long gloves. and fancy hair combs or other adornant.

FOR the petticoat influence in the new mode sets apart the girl who has a degree of demure coquetry still smoldering within her breast from the straightforward practical girl who thinks everything is just four-square and that triangles are merely geometric expressions,

Therefore we find new spring party clothes going in for petticoats. Not merely asking for them: incorporal- ing them in their design and their character.

There are many kinds of petticoat influence. If you are ultra-modern. there is the pajama evening gown all be suffled or be flounced so that it becomes an enchant- ing bit of apparel.

If you are a bit old-fashioned there is the actual ruffled petticoat protruding or at least showing when one sits down. Preferably this petticoat will be of a con- trasting color, such as a spring yellow ruffled dress with an emerald green flounced petticoat.

And, of course, if you are incurably old-fashioned. in the way that is most coquelish, you will buy yourself immediately one of the new evening gowns that has panialets, in ruffled nell The pantalets don't show- except when you lift your skirt to take the stairs.

o

I. VERY new is the petticoat influence as seen in a soft beige lace dinner gown which is quite suitable for dancing, too. The gown is made of beige chiffon over lace, and below the hipline the gown has a full gored skirt which is slashed so, that once in a while the pretty little pantalet petticoat shows. It is made of ruf- fles of the beige lace and whether it shows through the chiffon gown, of is seen as you lift your skirt or moye, it is quite a ladylike touchi, a modern touch, an envia ble one.

This gown has an unusual bodice arrangement. The front is conservatively cut, with narrow shoulder straps,

III. there's something provocatively feminine about this black pompa- dour gown that purposely shows its muslin de soic potticoat.

IV. and here you have the white satin pajama wedding gown the foundation sleevaloss, trousered covered with a flaring sleeved, long fishtailed coateo of Imitation chan- tilly lace.

but the back is cut ultra-low, and the front, hins sash ends which knot at the center, cross and go back to form a sash that ties in a bow in the back, a very modest and youthful touch.

IF TWICE romantic is the powder blue taffeta crening ensemble which has a flounced petticoat. First because

it has such a cute jacket that uses ruching to finish its short sleeves, and second because it combines the most delicate of pinks with powder blue when it comes to making the petticoat. This gown, made fitted with a full, circular skirt below tho hipline, har a quaintness about it that is delectable. When you sit down, if you are the proud possessor of one like it, you will inevitably show--and should-the pink ruffled petticoat which goes under it.

This is a real petticoat, not a slip. It has its own panties inside it, so that all you need in the petticoat, the gown and a brassiere to be all rigged out and ready for the party. The

little coat, matching in color the powder blue dren, lies on with a sash girdle at the waistline. Pink taffeta.ruching is used on the blue sleeves,

III. ONE of the most distinctive new petticoat- soft black taffeta, made like a coater dress, that snaps around the figure which is already encased in the most delectable of muslin de soic ruffled under slips. This gown of black taffeta has a demure off- the-shoulder yake made of embroidered white muslim de soie, with a ruffle like a bertha of the black.

The front of the skirt. I neglected to mention, rounds up in the approved Paris fashion, finished with a double ruffle like the bertha, and where it fastens at the waist there is a bouquet of lovely satin flowers, in many tones of red and pink, with yellow centers and green leaves, a veritable spot of color.

The flounce petticoat shows in front, of course. That is the high spot of the whole cut. It is not the gown for any of you who can afford only one in a season. But if you have a profligate soul, if you intend having at least two, preferably more, this is a gown that would make you the cynosure of envious eyes at any spring party,

IV. IF YOU are very young and are counting on being a bride this spring, maybe you would like to know that there is a wedding pajama suit on the market which reflects. this same petticoat influence.

It is made of white satin and imitation Chantilly lace. The wedding gown proper is sleeveless, low-necked and quite suitable for dancing at evening parties later on. There is a long, fish-tailed coatee of the lace and satin which gives the gown its train and its angel sleeves.

V. QUITE different and a bit more daring is the apple

green spring evening dress of faille taffeta that has apricot colored net be-ruffled pantalets of net under it. It has 305097

princess line, with fine hand-tucks running criss-cross on the bodice and a be-ruffled skirt that gets fuller and fuller as it near the floor,
