AVIATION TALK.

ADVANTAGES OF FLYING BOATS FOR HONGKONG.

TELEGRAPH. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1931.

CREATION OF INTEREST

ut

The development of aviation in Hongkung by the use of flying bonts was advocated by Squadron Leader P. C. Wood, senior officer Kai Tak, when addressing Rotarians at the weekly meeting of the Hongkong Chrb, at Messrs. Lane Crawford's restaurant yes terday, under the Chairmanship of Sir William Hornell.

engines) made by Shorts, Rochester, but we have many types in course of experimental flying now, and can assure you that we are in no way behind any country In the world as

regards this very im. portant side of flying. In fact, Pay we are in advance.

The flying boats mostly used at present in the Service are the twin engine Southampton lying boat, the same type which flew froin Eng land in 1927 round Australia to to Singapore Hongkong and back (some 26,000 miles) without any trouble at all. This flight was in no way a "stunt" but was carried out as a service fight without any anxiety as to the result.

But these Southamptons will soon be replaced by some other type with a great range. In fact, one boat in my mind at the moment

made

ach a range you will that it in possible to fly from England to Hongkong un an all red route by way

of Gibraltar. Malta, Port Said, Aden, Karachi, down the Indian Coast, to Singapore and Hongkong, making the last lap in 15 hours non-stop, and all this with the aid of an automatic-gyra of which you may have read in the papers.)

The Chairman welcomed Mr. A. Ritchie, of Messrs. Lowe, Bingham and Matthews, as a guest, after which he announced that the am bulance concert would take place at King's College at nine o'clock next Saturday.

"Squadron Leader P'. C. Wood's as follows: Gentle address was

address ked 141 LITTL nion: 3 you on the subject of aviation. Am afraid speech making is not my strong sell, but I will endeavour to interest you on a small part of the subject for a few minutes. Of course, aviation is a very big sub-pilot jeet so that I have selected a branch of flying which, I think, is the one which will be of more interesi, than to this Colony in the any other future, and that is the subject of "Flying Boats."

Most of you are probably quite clear as to what a flying hont is, but for the benefit of any who may not be, a flying boat is nú afrcraft bate up of a hall, either madiogany or metal, with the usual superstructure in the form of wings, etc. It differs Crom an ordinary float seaplane in that it reals on the water on the hsl as an ordinary ship and not on two floats.

stood their mooring tests just as the big craft did and were very good In the air. Such boots as those, I contend, would bo a suit- able type for use in the Colony. They are built as amphibians, and by merely pulling on a lever lower the wheels and you can land on the sea or on land. Another type, slightly larger, carry from slx to eight passengers, and some of these boats have been bought.

a company formed in New Zealand, carrying passengers be- tween the two latanils. These are the sort, I suggest. would, be the most suitable for use in long- kong.

An Explanation.

1 have chosen the subject of "Flying Boats" because I feel ru Hying bout actually is. One sees any people do not know what a in the newspapers, with all due res. pect to them because they nake mistakes at times, that a dying bont fa a boat which flies. It is not reaplane or an aeroplane. It is boat, and there is

a great deal of difference. You cannot leave a sea- plane at a mooring, und an noro- plane, as I know to my cost, does not Boat.

In a country like this, where there is no doubt landing grounds are very few and far be tween, as we have only Kal Tack and Kwanti Race Course, which la a very doubtful landing ground, flying boat is the obvious solution. I am not exaggerating, but it would not surprise me in the least for a flying bout to fly the Atlantic with

This is not a dream of the future. gentlemen, it could be done now, but, of course, money is the great thing we are ap against in produc-300 ing these huge boats, and they col anything between £45,000 to £35,000 each.

I would like you to picture a squadron of flying boats in the nour future with a mother flying boat which

is under constriction at Vickera Works at the moment. The mother bont will have a span of 170 feet and she will draw some- Flying boats are now in use as thing like five feet of water.
