CORRESPONDENCE.

Christian Science,

[To The Editor of Hongkong Telegraph.]

เษ

Sir, In replying to Rev. Mr Koop's so-called searching analysis of Christian Science, as reported in your yesterday's issue, the writer la backed in his attempt by soms thirty years of very close connexion with Mr. Koop's Church, thirty attendance at ser- years of regular attent vices, as a communicant, as earnest worker in various Church offices, before taking up the study

Christian Science, and of

it is therefore possible for me to some what appreciate Mr. Koop's point of view. I can quite imagine the thought striking him very forcibly; is time this Christian Solonce must see business was stopped.

Aud

Manes

I can do about it." Then came the deiving into "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy, with a mind filled with his own notions of what ahould be, searching for material with which to flay Mrs. Eddy her efforts to present to the world Romething better than it had before. To any Church, apparently, that which is not in accord with its own teaching seems heretical. Mr. Koop will probably remember the Church experiences of his own after the Reformation, but he will, no doubt, say that such a break away was not heretical nor founded on heresies, (though the Church from which it parted may deem it 80.) Marcion, Basilides, and the restwriting in the second century, may have known a good deal more of real Christianity than for. Mr. Koop gives them credit As is stated; "These worthics com- pelled the scholars of the Christian Church to think out their gospel und state it in clear terms"-hence, probably the hopeless mixup that is nt the present time being manifest- is called ed throughout whint Christendom. What are the clear terms, and how many to-day accept them as such? There would have of England, no been no Church Nonconformity, etc., if those terms had been as clear as the above would infer, for the Church in its entirety would have been proving its faith by its works, as Christion Science la doing to-day, and there would have been neither cause nor need for division.

The writer wishes to say at this juncture that this; reply is not written in any spirit of malice, as he holla nothing but goodwill to- wards one who is manifestly doing. according to his lights, what he considers best for his flock, and for himself.

"What then shall we any of these ancient heresies redressed and em- broidered for the 20th. century. this strange idea that matter has no existence, that pain and evil are illusions? Christian Science says that God is good, all good, m mutably good, and that man is Ils image and likeness, as is taught in the first chapter of Genesis; that He is the only creator and that, therefore, He did not create error or evil, even though He did create. all that was made. Hence the Christianly Selentifie conclusion is reached that all that is not good with its including materiality error, sin, sickness and mortality- has no real existence.

Mr. Koop says: "On the simples! showing Mrs. Eddy did not demons- rate her own teaching. She was dependent upon matter whose exlat- ence she denies. The fact that abe took food and could not live without

men

Invalidates her whole theory ebout medicine, etc." How Mr. Koop flatters Mrs. Eddy! For how many hundreds of years-have men been searching for "the truth, Cas

that makes Jestis teaches) free," prior to our Leader's advent, propounding theories galore and, evidently, getting little nearer to their objective and yet, when the idenis of Christian Science are put forward, Mr. Koop, and

many like him, expect the founder (and prob ably her students also) to im- mediately attain that state of per- fuction given out as idend it in but Christian Scientists have a mass of age-old beliefs to unload before they are free and able to fully grasp the Import of the ideals presented to them by Christian Science and wo |adk, in all humility, for just

love and tolerance of others' be liefs than is shown in Mr. Koop'e pronouncement under roview.

Our Leader claims that sho has доло right back to primitive Christianity in her effort to find the remedy for the dimculties at present all too apparent to ua, She has gone back even prior to the time of Marcion and the rest, and those of us who have studied Christian Selence with a rather more open mind than has Mr. Koop! realize that she has again uncovered the the flaw in history of man,

the flaw being that we have been per- istenlly hanging on to such notions as that God created us out of dusti or slime: that we, God's children, are miserable sinners; that Go gave us willia of our own with which to go on in our own sweet ways, 118 He had evidently failed to His beneficent control over on. Whatever Mr. Koop may think of will not pre- vent Christian Scientists, from realizing that God is good, in spite of all the foolish things believed about Him, and that man is the image and likeness of God, and, therefore, in reality, all good.

Christian Science is Christianity, despite any denial of that fact. It is proving it Christiiness by its good works. Mr. Koop may lay his hands, and even his feet and his whole body, on the sick, but he will not find any recovery taking place unless he has "that mind which was in Christ Jesus." He states that Jesus' methods have been used since by his followers and by wise physicians. It is not so very long since some of the lenders of his Church were

declaring that the miracles were discredited, that they were, in fact, impossible, according

ig. to present-day bellefs. It good to see that that notion has changed. It will be better still when we see the minds of the Clergy so infused with the healing Truth and Love as taught in the Bible and demonstrated in Christian Science. that they are able to "lay hands on the sick and they shall recover," without the use of pills and polions, is God. It teaches that all real mustard plasters and knives, which existence reflects the omnipotence, omniscience and to have been the omnipresence, do not seem regular

of atock-in-trade our omniactivity-the all-in-allness-of Master and his disciples.

God, good.
