CHALLENGE

TO BALDWIN

AS TORY LEADER.

“GREAT MISCHIEF” TO PARTY.

ELECTION VIEWS AT ST. GEORGE'S.

REPLY TO CRITICS.

London, Mar. 6.

Mr. Baldwin's leadership of the Conservative Party which is being hotly ansailed by a certain section of the London Press and which is being directly challenged in the by- election at St. George's. Westminister, was the sub. ject of comment by three political personalities to-day, Mr. Alfred Duff Cooper, Sir Ernest Petter, and Mr. Bald- win bimself.

Mr. Alfred Duff Cooper was adopted yesterday as the official Conservative candidate at St.

George's, and in his first speech aince his nomination, he said:

"I am a whole-hearted supporter of Mr. Kaldwin as the leader of our party, but the lasue is not su much as to who is to be leader, but whether the leader is to be dietated to by the Press."

Sir Ernest Petter.

Sir Ernest Petter, the Indepènd- ent Conservativo, who will be Mr. Duff Cooper's only opponent in the St. George's election and the wisdom

who opeals que tendership, issued of Mr. Baldwin'a his election address to-day. In it he plainly slates that he br lieves that the continuance of Mr. Baldwin 118 the Conservative lender would be fraught with great mischief to the Party and

to the nation.

Mr. Baldwin made only an in- direct reference to the challenge to his leadership, in the course of a speech at Newlón Abbot dealing principally with the developmenti in India since the adoption of the Reports of the London Round Table Conference.

"Not Lænst Justifiention."

Mr. Baldwin said that the idea seemed to have got about that he, as the Conservative trader. committed to a policy of with- drawal and surrender in India,

WHEN

As nisual, there was not the lenst justification for any of these charges, which were made by his regular enemies, who never lost a chance of personal- ly attacking him.

So far, he said, from contem- plating the weakening of any of the bonds uniting Great Britain with India, he, and all loyal Con- servatives, wished to effect al closer union than had ever existed between India and Britain before.

India did not mean only tremist agitators.
