Bg Subscriptions. At first it was proposed that this year's Directors should raise half of the sum required, and that the balance should be secured by their successors, But Mr. Tam and his colleagues, having jointly succeed- ed in raising from various wealthy. the merchants subscriptions to amount of $60,000 went further in- dividually to solicit subscriptions front other quarters. Up to yea- terday the subscriptions accured by Mr. Tam himself, amounted to $70,000, making a total of $130,000, including the $60,000 acquired by the joint work of Mr. Tam and his colleagues.

Of the subscriptions secured by Mr. Tam, $30,000 was subscribed by Sir Robert Ho Tung, $10,000 by Madam Lam Fuk-chi, and $30,000 by a certain European, who pro- mised Mr. Tam the sum on condi- tion that he succeeded in raising subscriptions up to $100,000.

The photos of these three bene- factors will be hung in the hall of the Institute,

It is proposed that I. E. the Governor, Sir William Peel, be re- quested to lay the foundation stone of the Institute on a day to be, selected between the 16th, and the' 20th. March.
