THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1931.
THE NAVY THWARTED.
LOSE ALL-IMPORTANT SIM SHIELD MATCH.
Thanks Lo i win-though not entirely deserved—over. the Navy yesterday, the Hongkong Hockey Club survive to fight another day for the bonour of holding the Sim Shield for twelve months.
The meeting of the teams at the U.S.R.C. found the Navy starting off with a big advantage, fer they only had to make a draw of the game to win the shield. On the other hand, the Club were bound to win if they were to enjoy the right of a replay for final decision of, custodianship.
That they accomplished this was n nieriturious fent, particularly as they started off the second half à goal to the bad, but on the run of the play they can
count themselves rather
fortunate to have so succeeded.
The match a whole Was die appointing, the lollseriminate use of sticks demanding too much whistle for the good of the game. Promising movements were spoilt, and a goal lest through this, both sitles being at fault, Territorially llie Navy enjoyod better share of the exchanges, and were well worthy of their one goal lend nt the interval, This was notch- ed by Bowman, their clever inalde left, and was the completion of a nice
movement.
fi
The second stanza was twe minulen old when Francis fevelted things up! again, beating the Navy custodian) through elever piece of opportun ism, following some excellent opening! work by Divet!,
The deviding goal came late in the gante, and was credited to Skipps, who published off a brilliant breninway with a dazzling sngle shot which foural the top corner of the het.
Whatever their faults, the teams were very evenly intched, with de- Com both rides standing out prominently. Donvan kept an ad- venturous, but deeltediy safe goal for the Club, wand was well covered by his hacks. The halves accomplished Rome good, breadding up work, but were n ad convincing in their constructive movements. J. Price was one of the best of the forwards, and Divett, opened up the gaze in line style. | Owen Highes appenred out of puslim on the right wing, and apart from his all-important goal, Skopjes did not! impress in the middlƐ berth.
The Navy were conspicuus by the manner in which the forwards wasted valuable opportunities. The defence, worked Dogether fairly strongly. although the custodian was anything but epnident. Bowman was too well marked to be an effective as in pre- vious games, and the wings lacked speed.
The result of the match leaves the Club and Navy level on points with three wins euch out of four ganten, and deciding replay will have to take plave.
