Disaster Explained.

Later.

According to published details concerning the disaster most of the passengers aboard were holi- day makers returning to their! homes on Shode Island, in the In- land Sea, to celebrate the old style New Year.

The disaster was apparently due. to a combination of circumstances -a blinding blizzard, a thick mist and a strong current. Both shipa were travelling in the same direc- tion. The Porthos signalled the Kikusu Maru but, owing to the bllading snowstorm, the signal was either misread or unnoticed and the strong current carried hor across the bows of the Porthos.. which practically cut her in two, causing her to sink before there was time to launch the boats.-- Retuer.
