THE SHARP break in the dollar quotation this morning may be accepted as a warning of still worse to follow, according to a local banking authority, who, interviewed to-day, stated that the dollar is likely to get much worse before it gets better. The low records achieved last week do not represent the bottom mark, unless something unforeseen occurs very quickly. In very definite and emphatic terms, the opinion was expressed that the time had undoubtedly come when Hongkong's currency should be placed on a gold basis. Not for years, if ever, may silver be restored to its former value, while a continuance of existing conditions for any length of time would be ruinous to most commercial undertakings.
+
Measures such as. the imposition of a duty on silver would be too troublesome and would cause confusion, but there is little to prevent Hongkong from adopting a gold basis. The banker added that Hongkong should do so at the earliest opportunity. Waiting for China would do no good. It might do a great deal of harm.

This means that the Bank of France will now accept gold of the standard fineness adopted by the Bank of England namely 916.66 per mille.
All gold sent from London to France at present must be refined, involving delay and uncertainty.
The immediate result of the change may be to intensify the flow of gold from London to Paris. but the opinion is expressed that gold movements may be regularised in due course,--Reuter.
