ENJOYABLE RECITAL AT
THE CATHEDRAL.
The very large number of poo- ple who attended St. John's Cathe- dral yesterday evening for the re- cital of Christmas music and carols by the Hongkong Univer- sily Christian Association, whe were assisted by Mrs. Snowden Jones, were given a treat, a well chosen programme, which includ ed one or two of the traditional carola as well as two excerpts from the "Messiah,” being de- lightfully rendered by the talented choir and soloist,
Opening with four verses from the famous "The First Nowell," m which the congregation joined heartily, and the Cathedral choir- boys saug discant, the next was a bracket of delightful two-part | carols, Bethlehem Down" (Peter Warlock) and "Now Every Child" (Harry Farjeon), which the choir sang with a wealth of fooling.
Mrs. Snowden Jonos was in ex- cellent voice and her singing of a couplet by that weaver of inspir- Ing melodies Vaughan Williams. entitled "Sweet Dreams" and "Wither's Rocking Hymn," WA both tasteful and full of beautiful expression.
Mr. F. Manon, A.R‚Ç‚O., who'was at the organ throughout, render ed John Ireland's "The Holy Boy" with pleasing light and shade effect, making the work a most ap- pealing one.
The traditional "Holly and the Ivy" was given full and rich treat- ment by the choir, and the con- gregation enjoyed taking part in the carol "A Virgin Unspotted." one of the most popular of the old Christmas tunes.
Mes. Snowden Jones gave quite a brillant interpretation of "Re- jolce Greatly" from Handel's "Messiah." allowing full scope to her voice, which was admitibly suited to such a composition.
Mr. Mason gave an equally stir- ring rendition of the majestic au- them "And the Glory of the Lord," another excerpt, from the "Mes- sial," his pedal work being especially impressive,
Finally the chair sang Gustav Holst's tranquil and Inspiring tune to "Lullar my Liking." this being a great achievement in de- lieate harmony sinzing, supported by some excellent solo work.
The recital concluded with the congregation taking part in the singing of the "Adeste Fideles." A collection was also taken for the Organ Fund.

Memories of Childhood Are Yours Happy?
Some of them, no doubt, still linger fragrantly—childhood fun, happy little incidents. Other memories perhaps are not so pleasant. The last generation of parents, however, kindly intentioned, had not the advantages which present - day science has brought, and in the treatment of childhood tile they often had recourse to nauseating and crude purgatives, such as senna and castor oil-sheer horrors to all children. Nowadays, science has given us the boon of a pleasant-to- take, gentle, yet none-the-less effective health-regulator for infants and children in

It I understood that the two river steners Paul Bean and Charlie Hartonin, which have been in Taikne Dock for sure weeks for repairs, will rome out of dock in a week or two and will be placed on the Canton service.
The Charles Hardouin, it is said, will be out during the next few days but the Paul Bean will not be ready for rather week or so. These two steamers will maintain a nightly ser vice between Hongkong and Cantoni and will berth at their old wharf.
It will be realled that when thear two vessels were sold at a public nueling, it was reported that the new owners intended to register them under the Portuguese fing, hut since then they have decided to fly the red ensign.
