THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,
CONVICTS KEY.
UNLOCKED HIS HANDCUFFS.
The question na to how a con- viet enme to be in possession of a key which he used in a desperate attempt to escape was raised at the Inquest at Romsey on Thomas Fern, who was killed when he leapt from a train.
With three other convicts, Fern was being taken from Winchester to Dartmoor Prisen, in charge of two warders. It was after leaving
Enatieigh that the struggle for liberty took place.
Three of the convicts were over- powered, but Farn aprang from tho train and was found dead by the side of the line,
beon
The four prisoners had secured to a gang chain, to which a wrist cuff on each prisoner was locked.
Why Train Was Used. Mr. E. G. Humphreys, Governor of Winchester Prison, fold the coroner that though Fern WAR secured to the chain he had a large amount of freedom for o long journey.
The coroner: I think the jury. would like to know why convicts aro taken by train in these days. It is Hafer
than motor vehicles for long
| journeys?--In this case a journey ty Dartmoor would be impracticable [bỳ conch. They would get there in the dark, and going over a wild part of the country it would not be safe.
The coroner said he had received a letter from the man's mother ask. ing the Governor to make arange- ments for the fanerni. She signed Berself "Mia, Fern,” but referred to him as "Henry James Lawley," Robert Flitton. one of the war- slers Trom Winchester, told the coroner that a key which would anlock the cuffs was found in the train. It did not belong to the escort,
"It ja asumed," added Flitton, "that one of the convicts got poss asion of the key, and an inquiry is proceeding."
Searched.
The Coroner: The convicts were not released from the chain ?--Not one of them, sir.
Replying to the foreman of the jury, Flitton said the key was not of the same pattern as that used by, the prison authorities. The prisoners had been searched but nothing was found,
The Governor told the coroner that Fern had not been anywhere the workshop and the key Near would not have been manufactur ed in the prison.
The Coroner said he was con- vinced that Fern was trying to es cape and not to commit suicide.
The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death due to misad venture."
