DISAPPOINTING GAME AT
HAPPY VALLEY.
Although Saturday's game on the Club ground resulted in a moderately comfortable win for the Club by two goals and two tries (10 points) to a try (points), there was a marked lack of purpose and direction on the part of the outside of both teams. Hardly once did the Club's three- quarters make ground as a line of threes-the Club pack were not wo quickly on the ball as is their wont- and the scores chiefly ennie from nolo efforts on the part of one or two in- dividunie.
The Club included Goldinan, on the right wing, in place of Allern, Grif- fiths coating,la-the inside position, while J. W. King came in to work the scrum. The Servicen side was na published. Et. David was not quite happy in the position of By-ball for the Services, and was somewhat un- fortunate in missing his opposite num- ber in the first half, although ho shepherded Turner well enough in the Arcond apell. The Services' pack had the better of matters throughout the game, although it was often din. appointing to see opportunities nude in the tight serums, going astray time after time, through the luck of cohe. sion in the three-quarters
Clever Full-back.
Whitham, of course, was anfe and clever at full-back for the Club, whilst Franklinm, for the Services, did most of his work quite well, have for an unsuccessful attempt to tackle Turner in the first try Ferguson was vir tually starved on the Club left wing, whilst Griffiths had not the chancer to use his swerve and speed that usually come his way. King did well at the base of the scruta, and, after he and settled down, proved that he can pass out a good ball and go down to the ball in defence.
On the Services side, Galletly wan the beat of the threes, although Par- ker did a Int of good work in cover. ing. He could not manage to make Worthington ground with the ball
had a good afternoon, but the pusses out to David went natrag after une or two men had handledt. Tratt hook- ed exceedingly well for the Services' puck. and Nicholson, Wilkinson and Pancor were other good performers.
Play Described.
The first 10 minutes were in favour of the Services, so far as getting the ball from the light seruma was con- cerned, but the following-up of the Club for words and some good marking meant that the Club territory wan nover invaded. Then, from a scrum Inside the Services' half, the ball went out to Worthington, who was bustled by Klug, and Turner. Making the beat use of his speed, he went away and shimmered past Prunkham for a good try. The ball turned us Gold- man was taking a fairly easy kick, and went wide.
Wilkinson made a lot of ground in n solo dribble after he had intererpted apnas, and picked up to punt over Whitham's head to make a nice dash. Three Club players came back, how- ever, and Whitham kicked to touch. Then there was useful forward work in the Club twenty-five, and Hamilton, with a nice chance, ran nerass instead of cutting through. West led the Club forwards back into Services Kround with n good dribble, and Pronkham had to touch kwn.
Club Scores.
A penalty kick to the Club found Goldman a little wide from a difficult angle, but be retrieved this forgivable when Xing error just afterwards, followed up well, and passed to Grif fiths, who ran hard towards the fing. Goldman majorised the try with n really fine kick from near the touch- ine He went through himself a few minutes Inter with a fine burst of speed, but right near the flag, and the effart had winded him sufficiently to make the difficult kick almost im possible. To was only just short, however, Before the half-time whistle was blown, Turner ran down and passed to Gammell as he met Frankham, for a good try, which Whitham converted.
The second half saw some really good rugger, with neither side being able to open the game up completely. Good marking and better play by the Services outsides saw the Club ne several times in danger, and a penalty kick to the Services should have open- ed their neore, but Frankham, al- though he was given two attempts with a moderately easy kick, was well to the left on ench occasion.
Play centred round the half-way line for a long time, until a forward rush by the Services pack Bow Gil- more run through to touch down. The try was, not converted.. A little before the end. GaRolly mn along the Services right wing, but Lammert came across to bring him down, with a good tackle,
