FOR THE POOR OF HONGKONG.
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT
DE. PAUL
The annual Bazanr of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which Is to be held to-morrow, raises the question: What is this Society which appeals to us no forcibly for support; whence did it come; what is its scope and what work is it doing in our midst?
In the Brst place, it must bel noted that it is not a mere philan throple society, distributing an much aims to the poor. It is not A Benevolent Society, alming only at rellet of distress, but a Society which has a two-fold aim (the onc
canling into the other and in-
of being extricated from it): the uplifting of the poor on the one hand-morally and spiri- tually even more than materially -and the nanctification of ita members through visitation of the poor.
The Founder of the Society was a remarkable Frenchman, Fredo- rick Ozanam, born in 1813. After A brilliant career at school he ear- ly left his home in Lyons to go to Paris to study law and Nterature, afterwards becoming a famous Jecturer at the Sorbonne,
At the very early age of 17 he founded the Society. It was then that a little bant of students--only eight in number-met together in private and asked ench other: What are we doing? we talk but what do we do?"
And they resolved forthwith to do ns well as ta argue, and by visit- ing the poor in their homes, bring ing relief to them in personal ser- vine, and endeavouring not only to ameliorate their hard lot material- ty, but to uplift them, morally and spiritually.
They were ignorant as to how to aut about their rewly-imposert task, but one of their number came to their help, by introducing to them a Sir Rosalie, a Ser of Charity, win taught them ho to proceed in their visits to the poor. She belonged to that great: institute of charity founded by the celebrated St. Vincent de Paul, who, in the brilliant reign of Louis XIV, used to go about the sordid streets of Paris at night and pick up the poor orphans and children who were often left there abandon- ed.
The Foundation,

Inspired by her teaching and example, Ozanam and his panions placed the little Society under the game and patronage of the great Saint of Charity.
Kindred spirits were attracted to them. Their influence was îr- resistible; they spread rapidly and by the time Ozanam died in 1853-literally worn out by his labours, intellectual, literary and charitable he was at the head of "E SOFTLY Which, but spread"""be" yond the confines of France to al- most every country of Europe, and was destined to be world-wide.
In Hongkong itself, so far away from the parent stem, it was es- tablished us far back as 1863, only 10 years after Ozanam'a death. Nor has it with its spread lost. sight of its first idenis, but s everywhere faithful to the "Rule" of its founder, framed shortly after its coming into existence.
It is in the best sense of the word a "social" institution, for while it visits the poor wherever there is need, irrespective of class, nationality, or creed, Its member- ship is open to all classes of Catholten alike, no distinction of class being permitted in its con- ferences.
Of this the example may be quoted of an Irish bank clerk who was fond of rainting how in his conference in London the member who sat at their meetings beside him, and who accompanied him in his visits to the poor was the Marquis of Hipon, Minister of the Crown.
Here in Hongkong, too, some of the early and most active members, still well remembered, were Mr. (Continued on Page 16.)
